๐—ก๐—˜๐—ช๐—ฆ | SOUTHยญLAND COLLEGE MAKES WAVES AT MILO NATIONAL INTERSCHOOL SHORT COURSE SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIP 2026

From August 8โ€“9, 2026, Southland College swimmers delivered an impressive performance at the MILO National Interschool Short Course Swimming Championship 2026 โ€“ Western Visayas, securing podium finishes and placing the school among the top-performing institutions in the competition.

Leading the teamโ€™s achievement was Abdiel Dylan Almaiz, who clinched 3rd Place Overall in the Western Visayas 18 and Over Boys Division, securing a podium finish for Southland College.

Meanwhile, Anya Martella Eusebio secured 1st Place in the B Division, showcasing her impressive speed, discipline, and determination in the pool.

Beyond the individual victories, Southland College ranked 9th among the 69 schools that competed. With two podium finishes and an impressive overall ranking, the school continues to make its mark in competitive swimming, showcasing the teamโ€™s hard work, determination, and dedication to excellence.

The earth remembers what the mind forgets. It remembers every footprint etched into its mountains, every memory carried by its rivers, and every forest once embraced as home. Long before borders were drawn and landscapes were reduced to territories.

History is not confined to books or preserved behind glass. It lives in the traditions of the people, passed from elder to child, carried through generations, and woven into the very identity of the community. In Buscalan, Kalinga, one of its most enduring forms can be found in the ancient art of batokโ€”Kept alive by one of its most recognized practitioners, Apo Whang-Od Oggay.

Each mark is more than a design. It carries the meaning of a connection to ancestry, community, courage, and identity. Through the traditional batok, stories that might otherwise fade into history remain visible on the skin.

But Apo Whang-Odโ€™s story is not simply about one woman or one tattooing tradition. It is a story of cultural survival. Today, on the International Day of the Worldโ€™s Indigenous People, we remember those who have walked these lands for generations, carrying with them stories, traditions, and a heritage that time could never erase.

It can live in the hands of an elder.

It can travel through the stories of a community.

It can be carried on the skin of a new generation.

But the earth remembers what maps forget. And in Buscalan, the people remember through every story told, every tradition practiced, and every mark that refuses to let their history disappear.

Imagine turning a boring weekend into something that could actually help your whole community. Thatโ€™s exactly what Mr. Japheth Gonzales did. At just 25 years oldโ€”an AI engineer and Southland College instructor in Kabankalan Cityโ€”he built a digital tool in only eight hours. Called K-Tracer, it lets regular people see exactly where money goes. What started as a little inspiration grew into something that could bring honesty and trust back to how our government spends funds.

Gonzales used his knowledge in AI to create a working prototype, โ€œK-Tracer,โ€ a platform that tracks government projects and budgets. Users can check if projects are ongoing, delayed, or finished. They can also see details like costs and suppliers, and even compare prices to make sure everything is fair. โ€œItโ€™s not about politics,โ€ he said. โ€œItโ€™s about transparency. We have the right to know where our money goes.โ€ He also plans to add blockchain technology so records canโ€™t be changed or deleted, keeping everything safe and honest.

For a young developer like Gonzales, creating K-Tracer was also an opportunity to show what can be done with the skills he has learned. His work as both an AI engineer and an instructor gives his story another meaning: inspiring students to believe that they can use what they learn to solve problems around them.

The coolest part? He proved that you donโ€™t need to be from a big city to do something amazing. As a teacher, he wants his students to realize that they can create change right where they live. โ€œYou donโ€™t have to leave Kabankalan to achieve great things,โ€ he shared. His project shows that students like us studying tech and related fields can really make a difference.

Beyond K-Tracerโ€™s features, his project also reflects that technology should be something that helps people, even ordinary ones, not something that only looks impressive. Through his work, information about government projects made it easier for the community to access and understand, making the platform encourage citizens to become more aware of what is happening in their city.

Although K-Tracer is still a working prototype populated with dummy data, its idea carries potential beyond the eight hours it took to create. From just eight hours of work, Mr. Japheth Gonzales created a tool that empowers ordinary citizens. K-Tracer is more than just an app. It is proof that one person with passion and skills can build something meaningful. It reminds us that accountability starts with us, and that even small ideas can turn into big breakthroughs.

Who knows? Maybe the next game-changing solution will come from one of us.
