AFP: NO DEAL TO REMOVE BRP SIERRA MADRE

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) on Saturday rejected China’s claim that Manila had agreed to remove the BRP Sierra Madre from Ayungin Shoal, saying there is no binding agreement requiring the Philippines to do so.

AFP West Philippine Sea spokesperson retired Rear Admiral Roy Vincent Trinidad accused the Chinese Embassy in Manila of attempting to “rewrite history,” citing China’s 1995 occupation and subsequent militarization of Mischief Reef as an example of Beijing changing its narrative in the disputed waters.

The AFP said the BRP Sierra Madre, intentionally grounded at Ayungin Shoal in 1999, will remain a Philippine military outpost as the military continues to uphold the country’s sovereignty and rights under international law.
