WHAT WE KNOW SO FAR: SHOOTING INCIDENT AT ATENEO DE ZAMBOANGA JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL

As of 6:20 PM, August 18, 2026

A shooting incident was reported at Ateneo de Zamboanga University Junior High School (JHS) on August 18, 2026. The incident resulted in fatalities and injuries, prompting an immediate response from school authorities and law enforcement agencies.

WHAT HAPPENED

At around 8:00 AM, a Grade 8 student was reportedly shot inside the school campus. The incident caused panic and disruption as students and school personnel sought safety and authorities responded to the situation.

RESPONSE OF AUTHORITIES

According to initial reports, the shooter surrendered at approximately 7:30 AM to Deputy Zamboanga City Police Director for Operations Lt. Col. Paul Andrew Cortes. Authorities reportedly recovered two fi****ms from the area, including a short firearm and an assault rifle.

The recovered fi****ms were placed under police custody for proper documentation, examination, and investigation.

CASUALTIES

Initial reports indicated that two individuals were confirmed dead, including a Grade 10 student and a school staff member.

Nine students were also reportedly seriously wounded and were receiving medical treatment. Authorities and medical personnel are continuing to monitor the condition of those injured.

SOCIAL MEDIA ALERT

Authorities are also looking into reports that the shooter had been active on social media before the incident. Investigators are examining online activity to determine whether there were previous threats, warning signs, or other information that may help establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

ONGOING INVESTIGATION

ATENEO DE ZAMBOANGA SCHOOL SHOOTING — ISANG MASAKIT NA PAALALA SA ATING LAHAT

Isang nakakabiglang insidente ang naganap sa Ateneo de Zamboanga University campus sa Zamboanga City, na nagdulot ng takot, pangamba, at matinding kalungkutan sa mga estudyante, g**o, magulang, at buong komunidad.

Batay sa mga pinakahuling ulat, dalawang estudyante ang nasawi, kabilang ang suspek, habang dalawa naman ang naiulat na nasugatan. Iniimbestigahan pa ng mga awtoridad ang buong pangyayari, kabilang ang motibo, pinagmulan ng mga armas, at kung paano nakapasok ang mga ito sa paaralan.

Masakit isipin na ang paaralan—isang lugar na dapat ay ligtas para sa pag-aaral, pangarap, at paghubog ng kinabukasan—ay naging lugar ng isang marahas na insidente.

Hindi sapat na tanungin lamang kung sino ang may kasalanan. Kailangan ding itanong:

Paano nakarating ang armas sa kamay ng isang menor de edad?

May mga senyales ba na hindi napansin?

Sapat ba ang security measures sa ating mga paaralan?

Paano natin mas mapoprotektahan ang mga estudyante at g**o?

At higit sa lahat, paano natin mapipigilan na maulit ang ganitong trahedya?

Iniulat din na ang ama ng suspek, na isang Customs Police Chief, ay na-relieve sa kaniyang puwesto habang nagpapatuloy ang imbestigasyon.

Hindi dapat gamitin ang trahedyang ito para magpakalat ng hindi beripikadong impormasyon, sisihin agad ang isang grupo, o gumawa ng mga konklusyon na wala pang sapat na ebidensya. Sa ganitong panahon, kailangan natin ng katotohanan, pananagutan, tamang imbestigasyon, at konkretong solusyon.

Sa mga magulang: kausapin natin ang ating mga anak.
Sa mga g**o: pakinggan natin ang mga estudyante.
Sa mga paaralan: patuloy nating palakasin ang seguridad at student support systems.
Sa mga awtoridad: imbestigahan nang maayos ang insidente at tiyaking may pananagutan kung may kapabayaan o paglabag sa batas.

At sa mga estudyante: kung may pinagdaraanan ka, huwag mong sarilinin. Humingi ng tulong. May mga taong handang makinig at umalalay sa iyo.

Ang buhay ng bawat estudyante ay mahalaga. Ang bawat paaralan ay dapat maging ligtas. At ang bawat pamilya ay may karapatang makitang ligtas na umuuwi ang kanilang mga anak.

Sistema lang hindi.

Pero hindi ibig sabihin na wala na tayong magagawa. Panahon na para matuto, magsiyasat, managot ang dapat managot, at gumawa ng mga hakbang upang hindi na maulit ang ganitong trahedya.
