PRODUCTIVITY Amidst the Long Dry Spell
A resilient orchard starts from the ground up β well-prepared planting points, a reliable irrigation system, and disciplined cultivation practices. These foundations donβt just sustain trees, they empower them to thrive, even through prolonged dry seasons.
With a conservative target of 20β25 fruits per tree annually, our young trees seem to have other plansβtheyβre already exceeding expectations. π³β¨

On MULCHING and COVER CROP
Using rice hull (ipa) as mulch in durian orchards is a practical and cost-effective method, especially in tropical conditions like the Philippines.
Key Benefits:
π± Moisture Retention - conserve soil moisture by reducing evaporation
π‘οΈ Temperature Regulation - keeps the root zone cooler during hot days
πΏ W**d Control - suppresses w**d growth, reducing competition for nutrients and water
πͺ Improved Soil Structure - As it slowly decomposes, it improves soil aeration, prevents erosion and nutrient run-off
π Lower Risk of Pest Harboring, compared to other thicker organic materials (i.e. coconut husks)
On the other hand, Cover Crops are one of the best low-cost practices for improving soil health, water management, and long-term productivity in durian orchards. It has similar key benefits with that of rice hull, but more consideration in its management:
π³ Control competition: Keep a clean ring (about 0.5β1 m radius) around the base of the tree
βοΈ Regular slashing: Donβt let cover crops overgrow and compete for nutrients
π± Choose the right species: Low-growing legumes (e.g. mucuna ) are ideal
πͺ΄ Avoid climbing vines that may choke young trees
