Saving lives is not limited to hospital settings. Healthcare teams are always flexible when duty calls; thus, individuals in the healthcare field embody extraordinary compassion and wisdom to deliver care for the greater good of humanity and to preserve life.

One scope of nursing studies is emergency nursing, which covers the concept of triage—the process of sorting patients according to the urgency of their condition. Triage has different systems, one of which is the 𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐑𝐓 triage, which stands for 𝐒𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐓𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐀𝐧𝐝 𝐑𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐝 𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭.

START triage is a quick emergency system used during disasters or mass casualty incidents to sort patients based on how urgent their condition is, ensuring that help is given first to those who need it most.

How it works:
Assesses breathing, circulation, and mental status in under 60 seconds
Patients are tagged according to priority color:
🔴 Red (Immediate) – life-threatening, needs urgent care
🟡 Yellow (Delayed) – serious but can wait
🟢 Green (Minor) – walking wounded
⚫ Black (Deceased/Expectant) – no signs of life

Together, let us watch this educational short film entitled “Before the Sirens.” Student nurses, together with their clinical instructors, embark on a COPAR journey far from civilization to share and impart knowledge to a community where healthcare awareness and facilities are poorly established. However, an unfortunate blast in the area tests the student nurses’ courage and abilities as novice lifesavers.

The film highlights how student nurses apply their knowledge in emergency nursing as a first line of treatment following a disaster, with START triage being strongly emphasized. Above all, the values of compassion, collaboration, and care for the people are clearly portrayed.
