IS YOUR PET’S FOOD STORED PROPERLY?

Good nutrition doesn’t stop when you buy the right food. How you store it matters, too!

Improper storage can expose pet food to heat, moisture, air, pests, and contamination which may affect its freshness and quality.

Pet parents in the Philippines 🇵🇭
Our warm and humid climate makes proper storage even more important!

Remember! Buying quality pet food is only part of the equation. Store it properly to help preserve its quality from the bag to your pet’s bowl. 🐶🐱

INSIDE THE BOWL: CHICKEN + RICE + VEGGIES

Chicken. Rice. Vegetables.
It looks like a pretty healthy bowl, right?
And these ingredients can certainly provide useful nutrients.

But here’s the important question:
Is this bowl nutritionally complete for your pet?

A homemade diet isn’t evaluated by looking at whether each ingredient is “healthy” on its own.
We need to look at the whole recipe—including energy, protein, essential fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, and other essential nutrients.

That’s why simply combining meat + carbs + vegetables isn’t necessarily enough.
A bowl can look wholesome and still have nutritional gaps.

What’s inside the bowl matters—but so does what’s missing from it.

That’s the kind of question we explore here at Inside the Bowl. 🧡

NUTRITION LAB MONDAY: WHY PROTEIN QUALITY MATTERS

When choosing pet food, it’s easy to focus on one number:
PROTEIN %.

30% sounds better than 25%, right?
Not necessarily.

Protein isn’t just a number. Protein is made up of amino acids, and your pet needs specific essential amino acids from their diet.

That’s why protein quality involves more than simply asking:
“How much protein does this food have?”

You also want to consider:
🧬 Amino-acid profile — Does it provide the essential amino acids your pet needs?
🔬 Digestibility — How well can the protein be digested and absorbed?
⚙️ Bioavailability — How effectively can those nutrients be utilized?
🥣 The complete diet — Does the finished food actually meet your pet’s nutritional requirements?

And no—this doesn’t mean animal protein automatically = good and plant protein = bad.

The quality of the overall diet matters.

So next time you see “HIGH PROTEIN!” don’t stop at the percentage.

Look beyond the number.

INSIDE THE BOWL: IS HOMEMADE ALWAYS BALANCED?

Homemade food can be a great option for some pets.

But here’s the part we sometimes forget:
Homemade doesn’t automatically mean balanced.

A bowl can contain meat, vegetables, rice, and other nutritious ingredients and still fall short of certain essential nutrients.
That’s because nutritional adequacy isn’t determined by how “healthy” individual ingredients look.
It depends on the whole diet—including the right amounts and proportions of essential nutrients.

So if you’re preparing homemade food for your pet, don’t just ask:
“Are these ingredients healthy?”

Also ask:
“Does this recipe actually meet my pet’s nutritional needs?”

Because a healthy-looking bowl and a nutritionally complete bowl aren’t always the same thing. 🧡

NUTRITION LAB MONDAY: OMEGA-3 vs OMEGA-6

You’ve probably heard:
“Omega-3 is good.”
“Omega-6 is inflammatory.”
“Look for a low omega-6:omega-3 ratio.”

But pet nutrition is a little more complicated than that.
Both omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids have important roles in your pet’s body.

🐟 Omega-3s include ALA, EPA, and DHA. EPA and DHA are particularly important to understand because they have different biological roles from plant-based ALA.

🌱 Omega-6s include linoleic acid and arachidonic acid. They also play essential roles in cell membranes, skin and coat health, immune function, and more.

And here’s where things get interesting:
The omega-6:omega-3 ratio alone doesn’t tell you whether a diet is “good” or “bad.”

You also need to consider:
→ Which specific fatty acids are present
→ How much is actually provided
→ The overall nutrient profile
→ Your pet’s life stage and individual needs

So the next time you see an impressive omega ratio on a pet food label…
Don’t stop at the ratio. Read what’s actually in the bowl. 🥣

INSIDE THE BOWL: HOMEMADE vs KIBBLE

Homemade or kibble - which one is better?

The answer isn’t as simple as choosing one over the other.
Both can be part of a healthy feeding routine when the diet is appropriate for the individual pet and meets their nutritional needs.

Homemade diets offer flexibility and control over ingredients, but they also require careful formulation to make sure essential nutrients aren’t missed.

Kibble, on the other hand, can be convenient and nutritionally complete—but not every product is formulated for every pet or situation.

So instead of asking:
“Which one is better?”

Try asking:
“Which one is appropriate for my pet, and am I feeding it correctly?”

Because nutrition isn’t about choosing sides.
It’s about understanding what’s in the bowl. 🧡

NUTRITION LAB MONDAY: DRY MATTER BASIS EXPLAINED

Science behind the bowl, simplified.

Have you ever compared a dry food and a wet food and wondered why their protein percentages look so different?

Here’s the catch: water.
A wet food can contain a lot of water, which means the nutrients are more diluted when you look at the numbers on the label.

Dry Matter Basis (DMB) helps us look at the nutrient concentration after removing the water from the equation.

For example:
A wet food with 10% protein and 80% moisture has a dry matter content of 20%.
So its protein on a dry matter basis is:
10 ÷ 20 × 100 = 50%
Suddenly, that “10% protein” doesn’t look quite the same anymore.

This is why looking at the guaranteed analysis alone can sometimes be misleading when comparing foods with very different moisture levels.

But remember: DMB is a comparison tool, not a measure of which food is automatically better. Calories, nutrient adequacy, ingredients, formulation, and your pet’s individual needs still matter.

Next time you’re comparing a dry food with a wet food, don’t just look at the percentage. Look beyond the label.
