Brotherhood of Scholars: Birth in UP Visayas

The UP Beta Sigma Fraternity in UP Visayas is a relatively young chapter in the same way that it stands on relatively young campuses in Iloilo: Miagao and Iloilo City campuses. One needs to understand the historical context of the transfer of the College of Fisheries (CF) of UP Diliman to UP Visayas to better trace the history of the Fraternity in the

In connection with the February 23, 2026 screening of “Bloom Where You Are Planted” at UP Visayas Miagao, we once again share “RANDY: LARAWAN NG HUWARAN” as a free eBook. First published as a heartfelt tribute, this collection gathers memories and reflections that illuminate the life, courage, and convictions of Randy Felix Malayao. Within these pages live the friendships he nurtured, the ideals he stood for, and the quiet strength that defined him. Published by JMP Creative Media and edited by Silvestre “Jay” M. Pascual (UPV ’92, GP ’93) — his fraternity brother in Beta Sigma — this volume stands as a testament to enduring brotherhood and a shared commitment to principle. As Randy’s story finds new life on screen, may these written words deepen our remembrance and renew our resolve. Read, share, and keep the flame alive.

Today, January 30, we commemorate the life and legacy of Brod Randy Felix Malayao (UPV ‘89), a brother whose journey from campus halls to the national stage embodied the very essence of the Fraternity’s principles and ideals.

Brod Randy was more than a peace consultant, journalist, and activist. He was a proud Isabelino, a (Fisheries) Guilder, and above all, a Betan whose life reflected the core values of Brotherhood, Integrity, Loyalty, Equality, and Service. As Editor-in-Chief of Ang Mangingisda and Vice President for the Visayas of the College Editors Guild of the Philippines, he revived campus publications and gave voice to the marginalized. He endured abduction, unjust detention, and torture under the Arroyo administration, yet remained steadfast in his commitment to justice and genuine change. He climbed the barrier against prejudice, proving that no force could silence his conviction nor diminish his service to the people.

As the youngest peace consultant of the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP), Brod Randy worked tirelessly for political and constitutional reforms, believing that peace was possible through dialogue and integrity. His assassination on 30 January 2019, while asleep on a bus in Nueva Vizcaya, was a cowardly act meant to silence his voice. But bullets cannot silence the spirit of a true Betan. His life continues to inspire us to uphold the Fraternity’s ideals, particularly Excellence, Achievement, and Nationalism.

Brod Randy is remembered as one of our most illustrious brothers. During his wake in San Pablo, Isabela, Betan last rites were solemnly performed, affirming that his name will forever be called in the Fraternity’s rolls. His memory is not only a reminder of the sacrifices made for justice and peace but also a challenge to each of us to live true to our oath as Betans.

Seven years since his passing, we honor Brod Randy’s courage, conviction, and service. His example calls us to stand firm against repression, to speak out against inequality, and to continue the struggle for justice and genuine liberation. His flame lives on in every brother who chooses to serve, in every act of integrity, and in every voice raised for truth.

Forever our brother Randy. Cheers to a life of sacrifice and service!

Justice for Brod Randy Felix Malayao!
