๐งฌโจ SPUI BS Biology Students Participate in the 20th BIOTA Regional Quiz Bowl and Research Competition
Students from the BS Biology program of St. Paul University Iloilo proudly represented the university at the 20th BIOTA Regional Quiz Bowl and Research Competition organized by the Biology Teachers Association of the Philippines (BIOTA-Phil). The event was held on March 6โ7, 2026 at West Visayas State University in La Paz, Iloilo City.
Representing SPUI in the Research Competition๐ฌ was Edwin G. Nonato Jr., a fresh graduate of BS Biology, who presented his undergraduate research on the first day of the event. His participation highlighted the research capability and academic training of SPUI Biology graduates.
Competing in the Quiz Bowl๐ง were John Mark Esquera, a 4th-year BS Biology student, and Nico Galele, a 2nd-year BS Biology student. The duo competed alongside 19 other teams from different institutions across the region and demonstrated strong knowledge, teamwork, and enthusiasm for the biological sciences. ๐ฟ
Accompanying the participants was their coach, Mr. Arthur Paniergo, a science faculty member who guided and prepared the students for the competition. Also present to show their support were Mrs. Merle Ann Tajolosa, CASE Dean and BS Biology Program Chair, and Diadem Pearl Taclahan, a fellow BS Biology student.
Their participation reflects the dedication of SPUIโs BS Biology community in promoting academic excellence, scientific curiosity, and active engagement in scientific events. ๐ฑ๐ฌ

๐๐งฌ SPUI Biologists Take on WVHRC 2025! ๐คโจ
BS Biology students from St. Paul University Iloilo proudly participated in the 6th Western Visayas Health Research Conference held at Diversion 21 Hotel, Iloilo City from October 28โ30, 2025.
With the theme โAI for Health Research in Western Visayas,โ๐ค the event brought together students, students, and professionals to explore how artificial intelligence is transforming the world of healthcare ๐ฉบ.
Representing the BS Biology Program of SPUI ๐ฟ were Nico Galele, John Mark Esquerra, Althea Cabanalan, Dana Louise Ilano, Riena Christal Shin, Althea Faith Somejo, and Diadem Pearl Taclahan, under the guidance of Mrs. Imelda Olaguer and with the presence of Dr. Sharon Ann Mendoza. Their participation showcased the strong Paulinian commitment to research ๐ง , innovation ๐ก, and scientific excellence โจ.

Exploring how artificial intelligence is shaping the future of healthcare, the 6th Western Visayas Health Research Conference convened researchers, students, and policymakers at Diversion 21 Hotel in Iloilo City from October 28 to 30, 2025. The biennial event, hosted by the Western Visayas Health Research and Development Consortium (WVHRDC), in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology Region VI (DOST VI), the Department of Health Western Visayas Center for Health Development (DOH WV CHD), and the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD), served as a dynamic platform for knowledge exchange, collaboration, and innovation.
With the theme โAI for Health Research in Western Visayasโ, the conference explored the transformative role of artificial intelligence in advancing medical diagnostics, data analysis, and healthcare delivery. The three-day event featured competitions, research presentations, plenary sessions, forums, and poster exhibitions. All aimed at fostering collaboration and advancing the frontiers of health science.
Representing St. Paul University Iloilo, BS Biology students Nico Galele, John Mark Esquerra, Althea Cabanalan, Dana Louise Ilano, Riena Christal Shin, Althea Faith Somejo, and Diadem Pearl Taclahan attended under the guidance of their teacher, Mrs. Imelda Olaguer, from the SPUI Science Department. Also present was Dr. Sharon Ann Mendoza, former Biology Program Head, whose continued work in health research reflects the enduring commitment of Paulinian scholars to scientific advancement. Their participation reflected the universityโs continuous dedication to promoting research culture and empowering students to take part in addressing real-world health issues through science and innovation.
Beyond the exchange of ideas, the conference highlighted Western Visayasโ growing commitment to research-driven healthcare and regional innovation. It reinforced the collective goal of building a future where advancements in health science benefit every community across the region.
