OFFICIAL STATEMENT OF THE UPHSI GOLDIES ON THE 53RD ANNIVERSARY OF THE DECLARATION OF MARTIAL LAW

On September 21, 1972, Ferdinand Marcos Sr. declared Martial Law and subjected the Philippines to fourteen years of authoritarian rule. In that period, more than 50,000 people were arrested under emergency regulations, most detained without charge or trial. By 1981, Amnesty estimates about 70,000 people had been imprisoned, 34,000 tortured, and over 3,200 people killed. Civil liberties were suspended, the press was silenced, and political dissent was violently suppressed. At the same time, corruption flourished, with billions of pesos siphoned from public funds and foreign debt skyrocketing from USD 2.3 billion in 1970 to USD 26.2 billion in 1985. Martial Law devastated both our institutions and our people, leaving scars of injustice that remain unresolved. To remember this dark history is to confront the truth that authoritarianism was never about protecting the nation but about preserving the power and wealth of a few at the expense of many.

Today, fifty-three years later, the echoes of that dictatorship remain. Corruption continues to drain public funds through ghost projects, substandard infrastructure, and unfinished programs, while impunity shields those in power from accountability. These realities compel us to act, not as passive witnesses but as citizens determined to defend democracy. As the UPHSI GOLDIES, we reaffirm our responsibility to call out corruption, resist authoritarian tendencies, and demand transparency from leaders entrusted with public trust. To honor those who resisted tyranny and to protect generations to come, we commit ourselves to a collective struggle for truth, justice, and accountability. Let this commemoration be a reminder and a vow: Never Forget. Never Again.
