In the Philippines, literacy is often measured by the ability to read and write simple sentences. In fact, government data shows that over 90% of Filipinos aged 5 and above are considered basically literate. However, literacy goes deeper than decoding words.
According to the Philippine Statistics Authority (2024), only 70.8% of Filipinos aged 10β64 are functionally literate β meaning nearly 3 out of 10 Filipinos struggle to fully understand and apply written information in daily life.
Early education reveals an even more urgent reality: reports show that only a small percentage of learners in Grades 1β3 read at grade level, leaving the majority at risk of falling behind before they even reach higher education.
Lalim PH exists because reading is not a race, it is a journey toward understanding. When learners grasp meaning, they unlock confidence. When they think critically, they shape their futures.
We advocate for deep reading, thoughtful questioning, and meaningful learning β because a nation that understands what it reads becomes a nation that makes wiser choices.
