𝗛𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗸 𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝘄𝗻—𝘄𝗲 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲.

Yesterday, September 21st, IITians filled the streets of MSU-IIT with voices of remembrance and resistance, marking the 54th commemoration of Martial Law. Led by the CASS Student Council alongside the seven societies of the College of Arts and Social Sciences, students marched not merely to look back, but to honor those who suffered and resisted under tyranny.

By turning the campus into a shared space for memory, justice, and accountability, students drove home an enduring reality: 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗮 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗴𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗮 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗼𝗺𝘀, 𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗰𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘆, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘁𝗵.

The 𝗟𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲, 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗴𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘁𝘆 officially commemorates the 𝟓𝟒𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐫𝐲 of the declaration of 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐋𝐚𝐰 in the Philippines under Proclamation No. 1081 and the subsequent dictatorship of former President Ferdinand Marcos Sr.

As we look back on this dark chapter in our history, may we honor those we lost and those who fought for the freedoms we enjoy today.

Let us commit ourselves to preserving our history, seeking the truth, fighting for justice, and ensuring that the lessons of the past are never forgotten. May they serve as a guide for our future.

𝗖𝘂𝘁𝗲, 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗽𝘆, 𝗦𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗱: 𝗗𝗿. 𝗠𝗶𝘆𝗮𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗮 𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗺𝗯𝗶𝗴𝘂𝗶𝘁𝘆

On September 18, Dr. Gyo Miyahara from Osaka University came to the COET Amphitheater to talk about cultural ambiguity. The talk was hosted by the Department of English, in collaboration with Center for Language Studies (CLS) and Literature, Language, and Culture Society (LILACS).

Dr. Miyahara covered Japanese myths about food goddesses and asked how we feel about our own abuhan, the "dirty kitchen." Along the way, we learned that a word is more than its dictionary meaning. It carries history and relationships with it.

𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 doesn't sort neatly into good and bad, either. Sometimes the unsettling thing is also the sacred one.

We do not look back at the era of violence simply to remain in the past, but to ensure that it is never repeated.

Let us continue showing up for one another—with patience, with kindness, and with hope. Let us be the people who listen without judgment, who reach out without hesitation, and who remind one another that even in the darkest moments, there is still someone willing to stay. ✨💜

Because sometimes, the smallest gestures carry the greatest weight.
