It started with an ecumenical service dedicated to all the teachers.

A short program followed where PSDS Geraldine B. Gawi warmly welcomed all participants and guests.

SGOD Chief Jacqueline C. Lunag, on her part, told some real life stories of pupils who later thanked their teachers for what they are now.

Hon. Jimmy B. Padchanan, the Municipal Mayor and guest speaker, stressed that teachers play a pivotal role in nurturing, shaping, and instilling knowledge, values, and skills to learners. In return, they become valuable and active members of the community.

Later in the afternoon, parlor and volleyball games were participated by all teachers.

Home to one of the UNESCO World Heritage rice terraces cluster sites of Ifugao, Mayoyao is said to take its name from the Hispanizced pronunciation of the word “majawjaw,” meaning bountiful. As such, the municipality boasts of upland and heirloom rice, legumes, ginger, and tomatoes.

According to legend, Mayoyao was established more than 2,000 years ago by game hunters from an area called Bfagwang in the southeast and by pioneer farmers from Cambulo in the west. Today, Mayoyao is home to the Henanga, one of the major ethnolinguistic groups that make up Ifugao.

The municipality is also prominent in Philippine history as a place that sheltered former President Emilio Aguinaldo as they fled from the Americans in April 1900. There, Aguinaldo and his troops rested and nourished themselves before proceeding to Isabela.

Then during World War II, Mayoyao bore witness to heavy combat between combined Filipino and American troops against Imperial Japanese soldiers. One such conflict, dubbed as the Battle of Mayoyao Ridge, lasted a total of 15 days (July 26-Aug 9, 1945). Aided by airstrikes by Army Air Forces, our troops were able to take back the town from the Japanese. A memorial for this historic site can be found in Mt. Nagchajan, Mayoyao, Ifugao.

Throughout history, the Cordillera has actively taken part in building our nation and contributing to its independence. Today, regional autonomy remains a tool with great potential to aid the Cordillera in preserving and promoting our rich local histories, as well as sustaining the region as a place for rest and source of nourishment.
