In a Survey Research, sampling is one of the crucial areas in which a researcher felt confused and uncertain, yet it is essentially needed in order to have a valid generalizations.
The four types of sampling methods โ Simple, Stratified, Cluster, and Multi Stage โ can be described as follows:
Simple Sampling (Simple Random Sampling): This method gives every member of the population an equal chance of being selected. It involves randomly selecting a subset from the entire population without any grouping or subdivision. The process requires a complete list of the population and uses randomization tools like random number generators. This method is effective to reduce bias and produce representative samples but may be impractical with very large or dispersed populations [1][2][3].
Stratified Sampling: In this method, the population is divided into smaller subgroups or strata based on shared characteristics (e.g., age, gender, income). From each stratum, a random sample is taken proportional to the stratumโs size in the total population. This ensures that all key subgroups are represented adequately in the sample, making it more precise especially when subgroups differ significantly [2][5].
Cluster Sampling: The population is divided into clusters which ideally mirror the diversity of the whole population. Instead of sampling individuals directly, entire clusters are randomly selected. Sometimes all individuals within selected clusters are surveyed; other times, a further sampling within clusters is conducted. This method is useful when populations are large and geographically spread out but can introduce more sampling error if clusters are heterogeneous [2][5].
Multi Stage Sampling: This is a more complex method involving multiple stages of sampling, often starting with cluster sampling. First, clusters are selected randomly, then within these clusters, further sampling (for example, simple random or stratified) takes place to select individual members. It combines the benefits of cluster sampling with additional refinement to improve representativeness and feasibility in large populations [2].
These methods represent increasingly sophisticated approaches to balance sampling accuracy with practical considerations of large or diverse populations. The choice depends on study goals, population structure, resources, and the desired precision of estimates.
