This September, the 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴-𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝗚𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 (𝗦𝗣𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗟𝗚) is turning compassion into action. 🫶🏻🌱

For the whole month, we’re opening our doors for donations to support 𝘁𝘄𝗼 𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲𝘀 — helping communities in need and giving rescued animals the care they deserve. 🐾

Back in 2020, inside the hallways of the Special Program in Science, Technology, and Engineering (SPSTE), they were testing hypotheses, writing research papers, and mastering complex formulas; today, that scientific precision transforms into life-saving care.

Underdog John Lester C. Arsaga defies the odds, surging from 5th in the district to Provincial Silver to lead SDO Himamaylan's historic Battle of Bots debut! 🥈🤖🔥

𝗡𝗲𝘄𝘀 | 𝗔𝗿𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗮 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗺𝘀 𝗦𝗶𝗹𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗼𝗯𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗕𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲

Ranking fifth in the district level and barely edging through in sixth place during the top-fifteen eliminations to secure the top eight final placement, John Lester C. Arsaga entered the arena looking like an underdog facing steep odds. Yet, when the final sensors fired, he staged a stunning come-from-behind surge—besting top district champions from across the province to claim second place in the line tracing category at the 6th Battle of Bots - Provincial Hackathon and Competition.

Held at the NOLITC Campus in Brgy. Matab-ang, Talisay City from September 12 to 13, the high-stakes tournament brought together the province's brightest young programmers. In a heart-pounding final round, Arsaga clocked in at 42.4 seconds, narrowly missing the championship by a hair-thin 0.2-second margin behind Isabela National High School, who recorded 42.2 seconds.

For STE program coordinator Karyl L. Morano, the silver finish is proof that determination can bridge the gap created by material constraints.

"Our learners have proven that resource limitations are no match for pure determination and ingenuity," Morano emphasized. "Even in the face of limited equipment, our young builders continue to thrive, and the overwhelming support of our community was the vital spark behind this achievement. More than just a win, this milestone is a powerful reflection of our unwavering commitment to advancing robotics education and empowering our future engineers."

The podium finish carries historic significance for the Schools Division Office of Himamaylan, marking the city's debut participation after missing the competition's first five editions.

The breakthrough campaign was made possible through the unified backing of the Himamaylan City Government under the leadership of Mayor Hon. Rogelio Raymund I. Tongson Jr., alongside SDO Himamaylan leadership headed by Schools Division Superintendent Lynee A. Peñaflor, PhD, and Assistant Schools Division Superintendent Eiggy D. Yap, PhD, with key support from Educational Leaders Grace T. Nicavera, Marilyn N. Galvez, Joseph M. Pagalaran, Risa M. Vidal, and Mona Liza E. Cañonera, PhD.

Capping off SDO Himamaylan’s memorable debut, Reniel O. Cebuala also delivered a solid performance in the line tracing division, while Liam Ezekiel C. Orendain of Aguisan Elementary School - Special Science Program secured 3rd Place in the Mission Challenge (Elementary level).

𝗡𝗲𝘄𝘀 | Fifteen of the best bot builders in the province went head-to-head at the NOLITC Campus, but John Lester C. Arsaga proved his machine was in a league of its own. Clocking in at a lightning-fast 43.6 seconds, Arsaga beat out a tough field of district champions in the line-tracing category at the 6th Battle of Bots Provincial Robotics Competition. The winning run punched his ticket straight to tomorrow’s finals, where the track gets harder, the pressure rises, and the provincial title is officially on the line.

𝗡𝗲𝘄𝘀 | Long before the gray waters of the Panay Gulf could surge inward to erase their footprints, a hundred pairs of mud-stained hands had already anchored something resilient into the silt of Sitio Malusay. In the soft, salty earth where land meets sea, environmental science was not read from a textbook—it was planted knee-deep in the intertidal mud.

On Tuesday afternoon, learners and educators from Himamaylan National High School transformed the shoreline of Barangay Caradio-an into an active ecological laboratory. In celebration of Science Month 2026, 100 participants joined forces with the Himamaylan City Environment and Natural Resources Office to launch a synchronized mangrove planting and coastal clean-up.

Working between 3:00 and 5:00 p.m. to beat the incoming tide, student leaders from the D’ Matinag Club, Science Club, and Special Program in Science, Technology and Engineering-Learner Government (SPSTE-LG), alongside junior and senior high school science teachers and select STE learners, combed the intertidal zone. Together, they cleared scattered plastic litter before planting 100 seedlings of pagatpat (𝘚𝘰𝘯𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘢 𝘢𝘭𝘣𝘢) and bungalon (𝘈𝘷𝘪𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘯𝘪𝘢 𝘰𝘧𝘧𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴), breathing real-world purpose into this year's theme, “Flow State: Fostering Focus, Foreseeing Futures.”

The planting site sits within the Negros Occidental Coastal Wetlands Conservation Area (NOCWCA), a sprawling 1,500-hectare mangrove network recognized globally as Ramsar Site No. 2271. Designated in 2016 as Western Visayas' first Wetland of International Importance, NOCWCA serves as an essential pitstop along the East Asian-Australasian Flyway for migratory waterbirds and a vital marine nursery sustaining regional fisheries across the Panay Gulf.

The selected species, pagatpat and bungalon, were strategically chosen for their high salinity tolerance and specialized root systems. Their complex root networks act as natural shock absorbers that dissipate wave energy, stabilize soft shorelines against erosion, and capture carbon dioxide at rates significantly higher than terrestrial forests.

While 100 seedlings represent a single step across a 1,500-hectare ecosystem, organizers emphasized that coastal resilience is built incrementally. As the afternoon tide eventually rolled back over Sitio Malusay, it washed over a cleaner coastline and 100 newly grounded roots: left behind to do the quiet, long-term work of growing into Himamaylan’s shield for tomorrow.
