In moments of sudden disaster, awareness and preparation can save lives. Earthquakes can strike without warning, causing fear and confusion — but knowing what to do can make all the difference. Here are some important tips to help you stay safe before, during, and after an earthquake.
Before an Earthquake
1. Prepare an emergency kit with food, water, flashlight, batteries, and first aid supplies.
2. Secure heavy objects like shelves, mirrors, and furniture to prevent them from falling.
3. Identify safe spots such as under a sturdy table or beside an interior wall.
4. Create an emergency plan and practice earthquake drills regularly.
5. Check your home's/School Room's structure and fix weak areas that could collapse.
During an Earthquake
1. Drop, Cover, and Hold On - Drop to the ground, take cover under a sturdy desk or table, and hold on until the shaking stops.
2. Stay indoors and away from windows, glass, and heavy objects.
3. If outdoors, move to an open area away from buildings, trees, streetlights, and power lines.
4. If driving, pull over to a clear spot, stop, and stay inside your vehicle until the shaking ends.
5. Stay calm and protect your head and neck from falling objects.
After an Earthquake
1. Check yourself and others for injuries and provide first aid if needed.
2. Be cautious of aftershocks - they can cause additional damage.
3. Inspect your home for gas leaks, electrical damage, and structural cracks.
4. Listen to official announcements on the radio or through your phone for updates and safety instructions.
