𝐍𝐄𝐖𝐒 | NORSU leads awareness on HIV prevention and sexual health

In a unified effort to address the rising number of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) cases among the youth, students, faculty, and staff of Negros Oriental State University–Guihulngan Campus gathered at the campus gymnasium for the HIV Awareness Symposium on November 21, 2025.

The symposium aimed to deepen students’ understanding of HIV, promote preventive practices, and eliminate stigma by encouraging informed and responsible decision-making.

Guihulngan City Health Office HIV focal person Hyacinth S. Pedillo-Sacristan, RMT, together with Kian P. Macalua, RMT, and Harla Alyssa M. Señas-Dael, RN, discussed the science behind HIV transmission and emphasized the responsibility of the youth in preventing the spread of the virus.

"Our main objective is to raise awareness, to encourage the youth to get tested, and to educate them about the causes of HIV to lessen the alarming rise of cases here in Guihulngan City," Macalua said in an interview.

"Education is our strongest protection against HIV, as it enables us to make responsible choices and protect not only ourselves but also the people we care about," said Alelayien Baquiller, a first-year BSED English student, emphasizing the role of awareness and responsible action among students.

After the discussion, free, voluntary, and confidential HIV testing and counseling were offered at the campus clinic.

The event reinforced NORSU-G’s dedication to creating a campus community that promotes health, responsibility, and respect, empowering students to make informed and safe choices.
