Glan, Sarangani Province

Notre Dame of Glan, Inc.: Yesterday, Today, and Beyond…

“…where verdant green envelops its environment, big and aged acacia trees clothe it,
and clear blue skies radiate its splendor…
…founded in August 1952 by the Oblate Fathers headed by the late Bishop Gerard Mongeau; later run by the Passionist Fathers, then by the Dominican Sisters and eventually by lay academic leaders under the supervision of the Diocese of Marbel…
…stands steadfastly through the years waving its banners upholding the Notre Dame philosophy of education and in propagating the Christian Faith, culture, and traditions singing out loud its motto: ALL FOR JESUS THROUGH MARY!

Introduction

Notre Dame of Glan, a private Catholic school in Sarangani Province, carries out its noble mission and tradition of educating the young imbued by the core values of Mary, the Blessed Mother, and profound love of God, country, and humanity.

Since its establishment in 1952, Notre Dame of Glan has catered the basic educational needs of the community thereby producing community-service-oriented and competitive graduates and students. However, the influx of modern technologies and changing political structures posts greater challenges, tasks, and responsibilities the institution has to cope and hurdle. Notwithstanding the ordeals it encounters, Notre Dame of Glan, Inc. vigorously surfs through the years in coping with multidimensional educational changes and trends toward global standards.

Throwing back the years and the hands of time…

Notre Dame of Glan (now Notre Dame of Glan, Inc.) carved its historic beginnings in August 1952 with the Oblate Fathers from France headed by the late Bishop Gerard Mongeau, O.M.I..

By the leadership and stewardship of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate (O.M.I.) Fathers, Notre Dame of Glan, Inc. has played a major role in the establishment and evolution of formal learning in the southern coastal areas of the then Cotabato Empire. Through the years, it has passed on the noble legacy of human learning in varied aspects emphasizing the gamut of Catholic education under the tutelage of different congregations and laity.

Starting with four simple thatched- roof classroom shacks along Ilaya Road, Notre Dame of Glan Inc. housed its pioneering two-hundred-fifty students in first and second year. Rev. Fr. Philip Smith (later a bishop), the first school director and the Parish Priest, supervised the school operations and religious education.

In 1953, the school population increased since third year was added. There were two sections in first year. A year later, the school was relocated to where it is at present, still with four classrooms but with galvanized roofing. In 1956, Rev. Fr. Charles Prass, O.M.I. assumed the school directorship but Fr. Robert Callahan succeeded him that same year.

As Notre Dame of Glan grew each year, it was involved in community activities. Students took great share of its infrastructure and physical development through varied contributions- money, time, and effort- in cementing the classrooms. Rev. Fr. Carignan, O.M.I. was its last Oblate Director when the Passionist Missionary took over in 1958. The Southern Cotabato Prelature was turned over to the Passionist Missionary who consequently directed the school under Rev. Fr. Leonard Armheim, C.P. in 1959-1960.

Two years later, Bishop Quintin Olwell, C.P., D.D. who was then the appointed bishop of the newly-divided Prelature, invited the Dominican Sisters of St. Catherine of Siena through the Superior General Sr. Natividad Pilapil, O.P., to extend their school apostolate to Glan. In 1959, the Dominican Sisters took over the school administration with Sr. Aurelia Navarro, O.P. as the Superior and Directress. The Dominican Sisters ran the school up to 1986 before it was turned over to the Diocese under the directorship of Bishop Dinualdo D. Gutierrez, D.D.

During the Dominican Sisters’ years, a lot of changes had been brought in and had occurred at the Notre Dame of Glan Inc. The sisters’ convent and a two-room building were constructed.

In 1966, Sr. Antonia Sulangi, O.P. who was then the Directress, applied for the opening of the elementary course requested by the parents. In 1972, the Elementary Department was recognized by the government. To accommodate the pupils, three more classrooms were annexed to the existing classrooms built by the previous administration. When Sr. Ma. Angela Isla, O.P. assumed the administrative office in 1960-1970, the elementary building
was constructed with two classrooms then two more classrooms were added when Sr. Elizabeth Yap, O.P relieved her a year after.

During Sr. Yap’s term, the construction of the administration building and fencing of the school campus was completed. Likewise, enrollment was notably very high; however, it suffered a severe drop when the government- run Trade School was put up just a few meters away from the Notre Dame of Glan Inc. perimeters.

In 1974-1977, Sr. Resurreccion Galura, O.P. took over the administrative post carrying on the full implementation of the new thrust in education under the reorganized Department of Education, Culture and Sports (DECS).

In 1977, Notre Dame of Glan Inc. which was then directed by Sr. Elsa Bacerra, O.P., celebrated its Silver Jubilee; Sr. Demetilla Ferraren, O.P. replaced her the following year (1978-1979); then, Sr. Soledad dela Cruz, O.P. (1979-1981). In Sr. dela Cruz’s time, the school enrolment remarkably increased that three more classrooms were put up and the faculty room extension was constructed.

School year 1981- 1982 brought Sr. Ana Celestial, O.P. to the community of Glan. Despite the financial crisis at that time, through the concerned efforts of the Parents Teachers Association (PTA) and the Student Council (1981 and 1982), two classrooms and a basketball court were added to the school’s physical assets. In 1982-1985, Sr. Hermelina Puig headed the school before it was turned over to the Diocese a year later (1986); hence, a new operational system was adapted being a diocesan school. Most Rev. Bishop Dinualdo D. Gutierrez, D.D. chaired the School Board.

Lay principalship and stewardship in Notre Dame of Glan Inc. started with Mrs. Ursula Barcelona (1986-1993); then, Mrs. Felina T. Librando (1993-1995); Mrs. Leonora Dagupan (1995-2004); Mr. Arturo P. Sarande, from 2004 to 2016, Ms. Consuelo R. Sarcon from 2016 to 2018, Mr. Sedney Rear L. Sincala in 2018-2019, and Mrs. Rose Espulgar this SY 2019–2020..

In 2002 (November 22-24), Notre Dame of Glan Inc. turned Gold with festive aura and grateful celebrations. Undeniably, it reached a significant and a glorious peak of its service not only to the community of Glan but also to the whole nation and the world through its Alumni.

As the years roll through, Notre Dame of Glan Inc. has remarkably carved milestones in both academic and non-academic disciplines in educating the young and in community service and development. It has eventually transformed the rural image of instruction, of scholastic culture toward innovative, urbane and globally competitive structures upholding the Notre Dame philosophy of education imbibed and inspired by the Blessed Mother’s simplicity, humility, and modesty.

Today, Notre Dame of Glan, Inc. adapts the K to 12 basic education program which covers foundational formal learning from the Kindergarten and gradually evolving to the six Elementary grade levels, four Junior High School grade levels, and completing it with the two Senior High School grade levels. Learning may seemingly not as it was before, Notre Dame of Glan, Inc. now starts to pick up the missing links despite all the odds that hamper and obstruct its progress and advancement. Gratitude is duly afforded to the supportive parents, community stakeholders, and loyal NDG Alumni. Guided by the Virtues of Mary and Core Values of Christian Catholic communities, Notre Dame of Glan, Inc., sails further ahead for fresher and newer horizons of profitable learning.

Yesterday… today… and beyond…Notre Dame of Glan, Inc. stands forever! Waving its banners high, it has gone a long way in its service and

commitment to human learning for the full, meaningful, and upright development of the community as it continues to sing out jubilantly –

All for Jesus through Mary!
