Why it's important to adhere to a catechism?
It teaches you the basics of the Christian faith from the Scriptures, NOT what you personally think is correct but what has been taught before you and well thought out.
It explains doctrines and what they teach with texts of Scripture.
It helps you stray from sound teaching. It is arrogance to say I don't need help to understand the Bible, heresies abide for those who do not read or study.
Importantly teaching the creeds from the past teaching sound doctrines in reacting to heresies that we should learn to avoid.
The Heidelberg catechism is a great tool to learn the basics of the Christian faith.

"I need not torment myself with the fear that my faith may fail; as grace led me to faith in the first place, so grace will keep me believing to the end. Faith, both in its origin and continuance, is a gift of grace." — J. I. Packer
