The Regional Science Research Center (RSRC) proudly announces its latest research publication on mangrove mortality in the Philippines, highlighting the major ecological, climatic, and human-induced factors affecting mangrove resilience.

โ€ข Hydrological alteration, particularly disrupted tidal exchange, was identified as the ๐ฆ๐จ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐ฆ๐ข๐ง๐ž๐ง๐ญ ๐๐ซ๐ข๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ of mangrove mortality.
โ€ข Sediment burial, coastal erosion, salinity fluctuations, extreme heat, and typhoons further contribute to canopy degradation and regeneration failure.
โ€ข Aquaculture expansion, coastal reclamation, pollution, and urban encroachment continue to intensify mangrove degradation.
โ€ข In General Santos City, disturbance-tolerant ๐€๐ฏ๐ข๐œ๐ž๐ง๐ง๐ข๐š ๐ฆ๐š๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐š dominates regenerating stands, while more sensitive species show limited recruitment.
โ€ข Visible increases in mangrove cover may not necessarily indicate ecological recovery, as species imbalance and poor regeneration can persist beneath apparent restoration gains.

๐ŸŒฑ The study emphasizes that effective mangrove restoration should prioritize restoring tidal flow, matching species to appropriate sites, strengthening long-term monitoring, and integrating community participation with scientific assessment.

The Regional Science Research Center (RSRC) of Mindanao State Universityโ€“General Santos successfully conducted an exploratory meeting with the ๐ƒ๐š๐ญ๐š ๐š๐ง๐ ๐ˆ๐ฆ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐ž๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐’๐œ๐ข๐ž๐ง๐œ๐ž๐ฌ ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ ๐‡๐ž๐š๐ฅ๐ญ๐ก (๐ƒ๐ˆ๐’๐‡) following the formal establishment of a partnership through a ๐Œ๐ž๐ฆ๐จ๐ซ๐š๐ง๐๐ฎ๐ฆ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐”๐ง๐๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ๐ญ๐š๐ง๐๐ข๐ง๐  (๐Œ๐Ž๐”) between the two institutions.

The meeting began with the DISH team introducing their organization and ongoing initiatives in health research and implementation science. Dr. John Paul S. Tosoc, Director of the RSRC, then introduced the MSU GenSan delegation, which included representatives from the OVCREI Research Division under Dr. Josh Elisha R. Octura, the Institutional Ethics Review Committee chaired by Dr. Thucydides L. Salunga, and the Department of Biological Sciences led by Dr. Tres Tinna M. Dela Cruz.

Building on the newly established MOU, both institutions discussed potential collaborative initiatives in ๐ซ๐ž๐ฌ๐ž๐š๐ซ๐œ๐ก, ๐ž๐ฑ๐ญ๐ž๐ง๐ฌ๐ข๐จ๐ง, ๐ข๐ง๐ง๐จ๐ฏ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง, ๐š๐ง๐ ๐œ๐š๐ฉ๐š๐œ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ ๐›๐ฎ๐ข๐ฅ๐๐ข๐ง๐  that will benefit MSU GenSan faculty, staff, students, and the General Santos City community. The discussions explored opportunities for interdisciplinary research, professional development, community engagement, and future collaborative projects.

A key highlight of the meeting was DISHโ€™s interest in engaging MSU GenSan faculty members and students in its ongoing Epidemiological Survey on Cigarette and V**e Use among Adolescents in General Santos City and South Cotabato. This initiative will provide valuable opportunities for students and researchers to participate in real-world epidemiological and public health research while contributing to evidence-based health interventions.

The exploratory meeting marks the first step in translating the MOU into meaningful collaborations that advance scientific research, strengthen institutional capacity, and improve community health through innovation and partnership.
