The "Upgrade Understanding Sound Segments in Phonetics (UUSSP)" community extension program was recently rolled out by the Graduate Program in Education of Mindanao State University – General Santos City. The seminar took place right at the MSU – General Santos City Graduate School where the venue became a lively hub for literacy learning. The effort was a joint undertaking with the City Social Welfare Department Office (CSWDO), whose partnership helped broaden the reach and impact of the initiative.

Spearheaded by the MAED Reading students and program implementors, the UUSSP was built on a clear, evidence‑based premise which is preschool teachers who understand phonetics are better equipped to guide young children toward clear speech, sharper listening, and early reading success in all through fun and developmentally suitable activities. By learning how to help children hear, produce, and identify sounds, teachers boost their pupils' confidence and lay a lasting foundation for reading and writing.

Through lively discussions and hands‑on exercises, the program demonstrated the Graduate Program in Education’s ongoing dedication to community service, literacy advocacy, and inclusive education. The implementors extended warm thanks to the school administrators, teachers, parents, and community partners and especially the CSWDO for their active participation and steady support, which turned the seminar into a true shared success. Special appreciation also goes to Prof. Wilvena R. Pernia, MA, MIE, for her guidance, leadership, and unwavering encouragement throughout the event.
