Here's the updated schedule for the 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗗𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 (ICDR) 2021

The International Conference on Dance Research (ICDR) is a platform for academic discourse on various researches on dance relating to the current social, cultural, political, and environmental situations. It is one of the component activities of Dance Xchange: The Philippine International Dance Festival.

ICDR hopes to bring together leading academic researchers and research scholars to exchange and share their experiences and research results on dance and its value to culture, society, and on the different societal issues. It also provides a venue for interdisciplinary discussion for researchers, practitioners, and educators to present and discuss the recent trends and concerns as well as challenges encountered and solutions adopted in dance education and practice.

DEADLINE OF APPLICATIONS: Feb. 6, 2021

As part of the NCCA- National Committee on Dramatic Arts flagship project for the National Arts Month, Tampok offers e-Turo Dula, a program that shall offer 5 online theater courses, harnessing the rich and vibrant praxis of theater makers from various networks in the archipelago. Each course will consist of 18-hours each course, that will run 3 hours per week in a span of 6 weeks, combining synchronous (via Zoom) and asynchronous sessions. NCDA Executive Member Dr. Jazmin Llana will serve as the program’s Curriculum Director.

Note: A student is allowed to enroll in one course only. A Certificate of Completion issued by NCCA will be awarded to participants who are able to complete and fulfill all the the requirements at the end of the course.

1. Traditional Forms in Contemporary Contexts: The Bayok in the Practice of Sining Kambayoka Ensemble / Mga Anyong Tradisyunal sa Kasalukuyang Konteksto: Ang Bayok ng Sining Kambayoka Ensemble

The bayok as creative expression for the theater was developed by the Sining Kambayoka Ensemble of the Mindanao State University-Marawi from the Maranao oral tradition of the same name. This course will teach the use of the bayok as storytelling form from the rich practice of the SKE which now spans more than fifty years and has dispersed in many places in Mindanao through the work of SKE alumni who introduced the form in the theater companies they formed. It aims to engage actors, directors, choreographers, playwrights and dramaturgs, and designers looking to use traditional forms to enrich their creative vocabulary in dialogical and ethical ways respectful of the source culture.

2. The Art of Managing Theater / Sining ng Pamamahala ng Dulaan How does one do theater in the practical terms of sourcing, mobilizing and using resources in the different contexts that theater companies work in, whether school-based, community-based, or semi-professional? The course is intended as an introduction to arts management for theater work in the Philippines and aims to enhance the skills of managers and leaders of existing groups across the country. Included in the course is a brief introductory module on theater festival management.

3. Practices of Community Theater / Mga Gawain at Karanasan ng Tanghalang Bayan

Designed as an avenue for knowledge exchange and reflection on practices of community theater across the country, the course will equip the students with the ability to articulate its processes and principles of working together in creating performances; to develop narratives based on reflexive reading of community context; and to devise strategies in confronting the politics and problematics of building community through theater.

4. Research for a Theater Production / Pananaliksik sa Pagsasadula

The course will heighten understanding of the value of research in the preparation of a theater production. Students will study the dynamics of research in the various aspects of performance -- in acting, directing, visual design, and aural design. Fundamental theatrical elements and discourses (text, performance, process) will be used as analytical tools to hone the students’ skills in using/ sourcing information and evaluating the impact of a work.

5. Theater for Development / Teatro para sa Pagpapaunlad

The course is an introduction to Theater for Development (TfD) as a form and mode of applied theater for advocacy, capacity building and mental health and psychosocial support, drawn mainly from the work of the Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA). The course begins with a thinking through of the two terms ‘theater’ and ‘development’, how and why they intersect, and the need to interrogate mainstream and dominant ideas of both terms. The course aims to engage students not only from the theater community but also practitioners of development work in NGOs who believe and have invested in the transformative power of theater to effect personal and social change.

e-Turo Dula Student Admission Requirements

Each course has specific admission guidelines. However, the following are the common requirements:

1. No prior educational qualification except that the student should have reading and writing skills in Filipino and English at junior high school level at least.
2. The student is a theatre artist or engaged in other theater practice as a teacher, manager, organizer, leader, development worker.
3. The student has interest and experience in the subject areas covered by the course and can articulate a brief Statement of Purpose (300 words), declaring why s/he is enrolling in the course and of what use would be the learning after completion.
4. The student has internet connectivity capacity sufficient for active participation in synchronous learning activities.
5. The student is able to complete the 18 hours (6 weeks, 3 hours/week) of the coursework.
6. The student is a bonafide member of a theater/performance collective/group and should be endorsed by the group’s Artistic Director.
7. Registration Fee: Php150 for early applicants (until January 31, 2021); Php300 (February 1-10, 2021); Scholarships are available for candidates endorsed by their theater organization (or supervisors/principals/department heads in case of theater students and teachers), subject to screening. Each region (Luzon, NCR, Visayas, Mindanao) will be given 8 slots per course.
8. Individual applicants without endorsement will need to pay the full course fee of Php3,000.
