Despite their reputation as vegetables, ampalaya (bitter gourd) and okra (lady's fingers) are botanically classified as fruits because they develop from the flower of the plant and contain seeds—the defining characteristics of a fruit.

Ampalaya's distinct bitterness comes from momordicin, a natural compound associated with potential health benefits. It is also a good source of vitamin C, pro-vitamin A, phosphorus, and iron. While its fruit is what we commonly eat, the plant's flowers and young shoots are also edible and considered vegetables.

Okra, meanwhile, is a seed pod, placing it in the same botanical category as tomatoes, eggplants, and squash. It is rich in dietary fiber, vitamin B6, vitamin K, zinc, and other essential nutrients. Like ampalaya, other parts of the okra plant can also be used in cooking.

Today, we celebrate 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗼𝗼𝗻 𝗗𝗮𝘆, commemorating one of humanity’s greatest achievements: the Apollo 11 Moon landing on July 20, 1969, when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to walk on the Moon, while Michael Collins remained in lunar orbit aboard the Command Module.

This historic milestone reminds us that every extraordinary discovery begins with curiosity, courage, and the willingness to dream beyond the impossible.

With this year’s theme, “One Moon, One Vision, One Future,” we are reminded that the Moon belongs to all of humanity. It symbolizes not only scientific progress but also global unity, inspiring us to explore, innovate, and work together for a brighter future.

So, keep looking up. Keep asking questions. Keep reaching for new horizons, because today’s dreams can become tomorrow’s history.

🌕 Happy International Moon Day!

𝗛𝗔𝗣𝗣𝗬 𝗕𝗜𝗥𝗧𝗛𝗗𝗔𝗬, 𝗛𝗢𝗢𝗞𝗘!🔬

On this day in 1635, the "Renaissance Man" of England, Robert Hooke, was born. His passion for learning led him to revolutionize various scientific fields, such as physics, astronomy, geology, and biology.

Employed by Robert Boyle in 1655, he helped build the Boylean air pump. In 1660 he formulated Hooke’s Law, stating that the stretching of a solid is proportional to the applied force, laying the foundation for the study of stress, strain, and elastic materials.

Hooke improved watch balance springs and pendulum clocks and became curator of experiments for the Royal Society of London in 1662.

In astronomy, he built a Gregorian reflecting telescope, discovered the fifth star in Orion’s Trapezium, and suggested that Jupiter rotates on its axis.

His book Micrographia introduced the term “cell” for cork’s microscopic structures and included studies of snowflakes and fossils, contributing to early evolutionary ideas.

Hooke also studied diffraction, supported a wave theory of light, proposed the inverse square law for planetary motion, and recognized that matter expands when heated.

𝘈𝘭𝘦𝘹𝘢, 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘺 𝘉𝘢𝘤𝘬𝘣𝘶𝘳𝘯𝘦𝘳 𝘣𝘺 𝘕𝘐𝘒𝘐… “𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦?”

First week of online classes… pero bakit parang yung stress level ko pang end of the semester na? 😭

From the bottom of my hypothalamus (kasi siya ang bahala sa stress response natin 🤓🧠), we hope you still keep the fire burning, the spark sparkling (𝘴𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘬𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨?!), and the light shining✨. This is just the real kickstart of our semester. We know everything feels overwhelming—sunod-sunod ang worksheets, activities, quizzes and deadlines📚. But hey, remember this: even cells don’t divide overnight. Growth takes time⏳.

One lecture at a time.
One requirement at a time.
One breakdown at a time… charot. 😭

Everything we’re sacrificing today will eventually become something we’ll be thankful for tomorrow. So if you’re tired, rest—but don’t quit. The future version of you, wearing that white coat (or finally earning that degree), will thank you for surviving the days that made you question yourself.

We got this, future biologists👨🏻‍🔬👩🏻‍🔬.

The lab gowns have been folded, and the final reports submitted, but our mission has only just begun. The NDDU Biological Society celebrates our newest alumni—the Batch of 2026.

You have successfully navigated the complexities of the life sciences, but more importantly, you have remained anchored in our core values of Faith, Service, and Excellence. We have spent our years learning that every species identified and every ecosystem monitored is an act of stewardship for our "Common Home."
