Strengthened Senior High School (SHS) Curriculum: Overview
Removal of Traditional Strands
The previous SHS strands such as STEM, ABM, HUMSS, GAS, and AFA will no longer be offered. Instead, students will select from two main tracks:
**Academic Track
**Technical-Professional (TechPro) Track, which is an enhanced version of the former TVL track.
Introduction of a New Elective System
Rather than enrolling in fixed strands, students will now choose elective subjects from different themed clusters, including:
ACADEMIC CLUSTER OF ELECTIVES
**Arts, Social Sciences, and Humanities
**Business and Entrepreneurship
**Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)
**Sports, Health, and Wellness
**Field Experience
TECHPRO CLUSTER OF ELECTIVES
**Aesthetic, Wellness, and Human Care
**Agri-Fishery Business and Food Innovation
**Artisanry and Creative Enterprise
**Automotive and Small Engine Technologies
**Construction and Building Technologies
**Creative Arts and Design Technologies
**Hospitality and Tourism
**Industrial Technologies
**ICT Support and Computer Programming Technologies
**Maritime Transport
Depending on the schoolβs offerings, students may also combine electives from different tracks.
Reduced Core Subjects
The number of general subjects will be reduced from 15β17 subjects to only five core subjects for all learners:
**Effective Communication/ Mabisang Komunikasyon
**Life and Career Skills
**General Mathematics
**General Science
**Pag-aaral ng Kasaysayan at Lipunang Pilipino
These core subjects will be completed during Grade 11.
Applied and Specialized Subjects Now Considered Electives
Subjects previously classified as applied or specialized will now fall under electives. Students will select these electives based on:
--Their interests
--Future career plans
--Intended college programs
Work Immersion Requirement
Students will still undergo Work Immersion or On-the-Job Training (OJT) during Grade 12, particularly those in the TechPro Track.
Who Will Be Affected
Students returning to SHS who have not yet completed Grade 12 may need to restart Grade 11 under the updated curriculum.
No More Transfer for Old Strands
Transferring schools will not allow students to take the old strands (STEM, ABM, HUMSS, etc.), as all schools will implement the Strengthened SHS Curriculum.
Purpose of the Changes
According to the Department of Education (DepEd), the new curriculum aims to:
--Simplify the Senior High School program
--Eliminate overlapping or repetitive content
--Provide more flexible learning options
--Allow students to personalize their learning pathways
--Better prepare learners for employment or higher education
