A FATHER’S DREAM🎓
When Dave Rusty Recososa passed the Civil Engineers Licensure Examination, his father Edwin found a simple way to celebrate.
Edwin went back to driving his usual jeepney route in Davao City, but that day, passengers did not have to pay.
Inside his jeep was a small sign that read:
“Libre lang po ang sakay ngayon bilang pasasalamat dahil pumasa po ang aking anak sa Board Exam bilang isang Civil Engineer.”
Giving free rides was something Edwin had already thought about before the results came out. He said that if Dave passed, he wanted to share the blessing with the same passengers who had also helped provide his livelihood through the years.
But behind the celebration was a dream Edwin once had for himself.
He had wanted to become an engineer, but was unable to continue his studies. Instead, he devoted what he could to his son.
“Pangarap ko din noon maging engineer kasi… kaya lang, ’di nakapag-aral. Sa kanya ko na lang ibinigay lahat,” Edwin shared.
Dave graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Mindanao. His name, Dave Rusty Diaz Recososa, appears in the official results of the November 2025 Civil Engineers Licensure Examination, where 4,268 of 14,043 examinees passed nationwide.
Dave said he never expected his father to celebrate by giving commuters free rides. More than the attention the gesture received, he was grateful for the sacrifices and support his family had given him throughout his studies.
The story eventually brought another milestone for the family. Days after Edwin’s libreng sakay went viral, Dave was offered a job at the Department of Public Works and Highways Davao Regional Office. Edwin’s advice to his son as he began his career was simple: remain honest and do what is right.
Edwin may not have been able to pursue engineering himself, but years later, he watched his son reach the profession he once dreamed of entering.
And when that day finally came, he celebrated by sharing the joy with the passengers who rode his jeep.
