This week, discover the fascinating research of Alfonso Lumabas through his thesis:

“A FUNCTIONAL ANALYSIS OF THE CHERT ASSEMBLAGE OF THE CALUMAT SITE THRU USE-WEAR ANALYSIS AND EXPERIMENTAL ARCHAEOLOGY”

Through use-wear analysis and experimental archaeology, this study examines 180 chert artifacts excavated during the 2019 and 2023 UP-ASP (now UPSA) Field Schools, offering insights into possible tool functions, contact materials, and the subsistence practices of the site's past inhabitants.

The case study for these three undergraduate theses is the Nagsimbaanan Site, popularly known as the Pata Church Ruins, located in Barangay Namuac, Sanchez Mira, Cagayan. The site was excavated in 2025 by a team led by Grace Barretto-Tesoro from the UP School of Archaeology. The project is a collaboration among the Provincial Government of Cagayan, the Archdiocese of Tuguegarao, the Cagayan Museum and Historical Research Center, the University of Saint Louis Tuguegarao, the UP School of Archaeology, and the Max Planck Institute of Geoanthropology under the Pantropocene Project. We also acknowledge the support of Barangay Namuac and the Municipal Government of Sanchez Mira.
