Alongside the National Committee of Geological Sciences (NCGS), a stakeholder dialogue and workshop was conducted in Siargao Island under the Siargao Island GeomorphoHeritage and GeoTourism (SIGHT) Project last July 14 ๐ŸŒŠ

What are beachrocks? And how do they relate to sea level?

While beachrocks are frequently used for relative sea-level (RSL) reconstruction, a recent study by Nawanao and others (2026) revealed that their formation and diagenesis is far more complex than previously understood. In this first multi-approach study of beachrocks in southwest Panay, integrated lithofacies, petrographic, and geochemical analyses provided:

๐Ÿ“ŒA generalized schematic diagram of beachrock lithofacies and sedimentary structures
๐Ÿ“ŒInsights into diagenetic complexity, specifically through analyzing variability of cement types and phases.
๐Ÿ“ŒA critical look at paleoclimate proxies, highlighting how fractionation effects in ฮด18O and ฮด13C values can limit the reliability of beachrocks for paleoclimate reconstruction.

๐Ÿ“For the last stop, we have three amazing destinations: CHOCOLATE HILLS, HUNDRED ISLANDS, and the ST. PAUL LIMESTONE FORMATION!

Wonder what these sites have in common? The answer is theyโ€™re all karst landscapes โœจ Characterized by distinct landforms due to the presence of soluble rocks such as limestone, these environments can be found throughout the Philippines due to its geologic history.
