Through โ€œ๐‘๐ž๐๐ข๐ฌ๐œ๐จ๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐‰๐š๐ฉ๐š๐ง-๐Œ๐ข๐ง๐๐š๐ง๐š๐จ ๐’๐ญ๐จ๐ซ๐ฒ: ๐๐จ๐ฌ๐ญ-๐–๐š๐ซ ๐‡๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐จ๐ซ๐ฒ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐Œ๐ž๐ฆ๐จ๐ซ๐ฒ ๐๐ซ๐š๐œ๐ญ๐ข๐œ๐ž๐ฌ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐‰๐š๐ฉ๐š๐ง๐ž๐ฌ๐ž ๐ƒ๐ž๐ฌ๐œ๐ž๐ง๐๐š๐ง๐ญ๐ฌ ๐ข๐ง ๐ƒ๐š๐ฏ๐š๐จ,โ€ the seminar explored the postwar experiences, identities, and memories of the Japanese-Filipino community in Davao.

This presentation examines how ๐๐ก๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ข๐ง๐ž ๐๐ข๐ค๐ค๐ž๐ข๐ฃ๐ข๐ง โ€” descendants of Japanese immigrants who settled in the prewar Philippines โ€” navigated postwar Davao society by selectively deploying their indigeneity and Japanese-ness. While historians have examined the prewar Japanese abaca industry in Davao, few studies address the postwar histories and experiences of Nikkeijin themselves, despite estimates that thousands continue to reside in Davao to this day.

Drawing on life-history interviews, I show that Nikkeijin selectively mobilized ๐๐š๐ ๐จ๐›๐จ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐‰๐š๐ฉ๐š๐ง๐ž๐ฌ๐ž ๐ž๐ญ๐ก๐ง๐ข๐œ ๐ข๐๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐ž๐ฌ to survive amid anti-Japanese sentiment and to obtain recognition from the Japanese government. Whereas the second generation activated their Bagobo roots to survive, concealing their Japanese ancestry, the third and fourth generations no longer narrate their Bagobo roots, actively tracing their Japanese roots.

Rather than resolving their place in Philippine society, I argue, this generational shift produced a double dislocation of Nikkeijin from Philippine society: socioeconomic marginalization as members of the Bagobo minority within Davao, and physical and legal separation from the Philippines through migration to Japan as ethnic Japanese. In conclusion, I discuss how we can remember these postwar histories and experiences of Nikkeijin amid Davao's social transformation and the growing reach of the Japanese nation-state.

AISSO was able to share new learning material kits, hygiene packs, Board Game donations, and household necessities to the Foundation. This collaboration between AISSO and the Field of Dreams Orphanage showcases that literacy extends beyond the four walls of the classroom. It is continuously fostered through dialogue, community commitment, and value-formation.
