🧬 AUTISM IS GENETIC
The National Autistic Society (NAS) has released an important update on the causes of autism.
On September 15, 2026, NAS stated definitively, following a comprehensive review of research, that autism is genetic. According to NAS, most autistic people are autistic because of genes inherited from their parents, which helps explain why autism can run in families.
However, autism is not caused by a single “autism gene.” Thousands of genes can contribute to whether a person is autistic, making the genetics of autism complex. NAS also notes that, less commonly, other factors can influence genes, usually alongside genetic factors.
Importantly, there is currently no genetic test that can diagnose autism or predict with certainty whether a child will be autistic.
💙 Understanding the genetic basis of autism can also help move the conversation away from outdated myths and parental blame. Autism is a neurodevelopmental difference, and autistic people deserve understanding, acceptance, appropriate support, and opportunities to thrive.
The National Autistic Society, established in 1962, provides information, support, education, services, and advocacy for autistic people and their families across the UK.
