EQUIPPING NEW FACULTY FOR MEANINGFUL TEACHING | Teaching Effectiveness 2026

As the University of the Philippines Mindanao welcomes a new Academic Year, the Interactive Learning Center – Learning Resource Center (ILC-LRC) welcomed the new faculty members through the 2-day Seminar-Workshop on Teaching Effectiveness, held on August 11–12, 2026 at the CHSS Mini Theater.

The Teaching Effectiveness program is an annual faculty development initiative of the ILC-LRC. It is conducted before the start of the Academic Year to help new faculty members navigate the teaching environment at UP Mindanao and equip them with practical approaches for designing meaningful learning experiences.

This year’s workshop brought together new faculty members from the Department of Humanities, Department of Biological Sciences and Environmental Studies, Department of Architecture, Department of Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science, Department of Human Kinetics, School of Management, and School of Medicine.

The two-day program focused on two timely areas in higher education: Outcomes-Based Education (OBE) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Education.

OBE-trained faculty members Professor Jhoanna Lynn Cruz and Associate Professor Jackie Lou Tagubase, facilitated sessions that encouraged participants to look beyond traditional approaches to OBE and consider how learning can extend beyond the classroom and into a broader OBE ecosystem.

Putting theory into practice, participants designed a learning activity based on one of their course lessons, ensuring that the activity’s objectives were aligned with their intended course learning outcomes. The activity provided an opportunity for participants to translate OBE principles into actual classroom practice.

The workshop also explored AI for Education facilitated by Associate Professor Cinmayii Manliguez, highlighting how AI is changing the way educators approach teaching, learning, and assessment. Participants were introduced to an AI guidelines template that they can adapt for their classes and explored effective prompting through the CRAFT framework.

More importantly, the session emphasized the need for faculty members to engage with AI critically, responsibly, and purposefully. The discussion also highlighted the importance of considering the environmental implications of AI use.

As new educators begin their teaching journey at UP Mindanao, the workshop served as a reminder that effective teaching goes beyond delivering content. It is about designing learning experiences that are aligned, meaningful, responsive, and relevant to the changing needs of our students and society.

66 incoming freshmen successfully completed the Student Bridging Program (SBP) 2026, a month-long initiative of the UP Mindanao Interactive Learning Center – Learning Resource Center (ILC-LRC) which ran from 1 June to 31 July 2026.

The SBP is an annual initiative of the ILC-LRC that offers bridging classes in English and Mathematics, along with psychosocial activities. The program aims to equip incoming freshmen, particularly those identified by the UP Office of Admissions, with the necessary academic support and preparation for UP learning, while also helping them adjust and acculturate to life at UP.

Throughout the program, participants strengthened their academic foundations through the bridging classes facilitated by English Faculty-tutors, Ms. Karen Francisco, a/Prof. Farah Aimee S. Virador, Inst. Liane Carlo R. Suelan, and Math Faculty-tutor, Inst. Eric V. Cagay.

They also explored effective learning strategies in the pilot run of the Learning to Learn Workshop headed by Mr. Hilton Soberano, Project Development Assistant for Student Development under the Office of the Chancellor. The session encouraged students to reflect on their learning styles and develop strategies to maximize their learning potential before the start of the academic year.

The program also gave importance to the mental well-being preparedness of the participants through psychosocial Mondays, a four-week series facilitated by Lakas-Angkan Ministries. They also joined a campus tour, facilitated by Ms. Ivy Ringcunada, incoming 4th year BS Data Science, to become familiar with key university facilities and prepare for life on campus before the opening of classes.

More than a month of lessons and activities, SBP 2026 became an opportunity for participants to build confidence, develop essential learning skills, and begin forming connections within the UP Mindanao community.

As the program concluded on 31 July 2026, the 66 participants were awarded certificates of completion in recognition of their commitment and active participation. Special citations were given to the top-performing participants from each class for their exemplary performance.

UP Mindanao's academic unit heads and programme coordinators developed Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)-enhanced learning modules for integration into their respective course syllabi during the writeshop, Designing for Impact: ESD-Enhanced Teaching for Meaningful Learning, held off-campus on 9–10 July 2026.

Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), as defined by UNESCO, empowers learners with the knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes needed to contribute to a more sustainable future.

The program aims to equip incoming freshmen, particularly those identified by the UP Office of Admissions, with the necessary academic support and preparation for UP learning environment while also helping them adjust and acculturate to life at UP.

Who can join?
This program is open only to incoming first-year students who are encouraged to join the SBP based on their UPCAT 2026 results. Distribution of invitations was emailed last Friday, May 29, 2025, so please check your inbox!
