You have a circuit breaker. But does that mean your electronics are protected from everything?

Not necessarily.

A circuit breaker performs an important protection function, primarily against overcurrent and fault conditions. But it is not a substitute for appropriate surge protection against transient overvoltages.

This is why protecting electronics should not begin with simply buying another device.

Different electrical problems require different protection functions.

Before buying an AVR, UPS, surge protector, or other protection device, first ask:

What problem am I actually trying to protect against?

Understanding the problem first can help you avoid false confidence—and avoid spending money on the wrong solution.

Protecting electronics isn't about buying every protection device you can find. ⚡

Brownouts, voltage disturbances, electrical faults, lightning-related events and other operating conditions can affect equipment differently.

And different problems may require different protection functions.

That is why Hatway starts with a different question:

What problem are you actually trying to protect against?

Understand the exposure.
Check what protection you already have.
Identify the gap.
Then choose wisely.

When the power comes back, pay attention. ⚡

After a brownout, observe how your equipment behaves. Repeated restarts, UPS alarms, or several devices behaving unusually at the same time may be clues worth investigating.

Don't immediately assume you know the cause—and don't immediately buy another protection device.

Observe. Record. Understand. Then decide.

Different electrical problems require different protection functions.

Know before you buy. Protect before failure.

YOUR BREAKER KEEPS TRIPPING. DON’T JUST KEEP RESETTING IT.

A circuit breaker that trips repeatedly is trying to tell you something.

It may be reacting to overload, a short circuit, a wiring problem, equipment fault, overheating, or another abnormal electrical condition.

The dangerous habit is to simply reset it again and again without understanding why it tripped.

A breaker is not an inconvenience to defeat.
It is a protection device giving you information.

What should you do?

First, notice what was operating when the trip happened.
Did several appliances start at the same time?
Did one particular device cause the trip?
Was there a burning smell, unusual heat, buzzing, damaged outlet, or discoloration?

If the breaker trips repeatedly, the problem deserves investigation.

Do not replace it with a higher-rated breaker just to stop the nuisance unless a qualified professional has confirmed that the circuit, wiring, protection and load are suitable.

Protect before failure. Investigate before replacing.

⚠️ YOUR EQUIPMENT KEEPS RESTARTING.
DON'T IMMEDIATELY BLAME THE EQUIPMENT.

A computer suddenly restarts.
The CCTV recorder reboots.
The Wi-Fi router disconnects and comes back.
A TV or electronic display unexpectedly turns off and restarts.

It is easy to conclude:

“Maybe the equipment is already defective.”

Sometimes it is.

But repeated unexplained restarting can also be a warning sign of a problem somewhere around the equipment—such as unstable supply voltage, momentary power interruptions, deteriorating connections, an overloaded or failing power supply, UPS problems, overheating, or other electrical conditions.

Under Philippine conditions, where brownouts, power restoration, thunderstorms, heat, humidity and aging electrical installations may all be part of the operating environment, recurring symptoms deserve attention.

The important lesson is simple:

Don't replace the equipment before understanding the problem.

Observe what happens.
Record when it happens.
Notice whether other equipment is affected at the same time.

And if the problem is recurring, unexplained, or accompanied by heating, burning smell, damaged outlets, repeated breaker trips or other abnormal electrical symptoms, have the installation properly assessed.

When the cause is unknown, buying another device is not diagnosis.

Understand the problem before buying the solution.

⚠️ WORKING DOES NOT ALWAYS MEAN PROPERLY PROTECTED.

“Okay pa naman.”
“Wala pa namang nasisira.”
“Matagal na naming ginagamit.”

These can give us confidence—but continued operation does not necessarily tell us whether the protection around our electronics is still healthy.

Under Philippine conditions, equipment may spend years exposed to brownouts and power restoration, thunderstorms and electrical disturbances, heat, humidity, moisture, aging connections, dust and corrosion.

Some weaknesses develop gradually.

A connection can deteriorate.
An outdoor cable can become weathered.
A protection device can age.
Moisture can enter equipment or enclosures.
Electrical problems may first appear as unexplained resets, errors, heating or recurring failures.

The equipment may still work throughout much of this process.
That is why waiting for failure should not be our maintenance strategy.

You don't need to open electrical panels or perform hazardous testing yourself. Start by paying attention to warning signs, knowing what protection you actually have, keeping equipment and connections in good condition, and obtaining qualified help when symptoms point to an electrical problem.

No failure yet does not mean no risk exists.

Protect before failure.

Your equipment may still be working—but is your protection still healthy?

Aging protection devices, deteriorating connections, moisture, outdoor exposure, and other hidden weaknesses can develop before equipment actually fails.

Working does not always mean properly protected.

Protect before failure.

⚡ AN AVR IS NOT A SURGE PROTECTOR.

Many of us use an AVR to protect computers, TVs, CCTV systems, audio equipment and other valuable electronics.

But an AVR and a surge protective device do different jobs.

An AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulator) helps manage certain voltage variations and keep the supply to equipment within a more suitable operating range.

A surge protective device (SPD) is designed to limit transient overvoltages or electrical surges.

This distinction is important under Philippine conditions, where equipment may experience voltage fluctuations, switching disturbances, thunderstorms and other electrical stresses.

The better question is not:

“Do I already have an AVR?”

Ask instead:

“What electrical problems is my equipment exposed to, and what protection is needed for each one?”

Good equipment protection is usually not about buying one device and expecting it to solve everything.

Protection works as a system.
