The study used hospital admission and weather data to examine diarrhea transmission among children under five, highlighting the influence of rainfall, humidity, and temperature on outbreak patterns and the value of meteorologically informed surveillance for public health planning.
The Center also extends its heartfelt acknowledgements to its Affiliates, Alexis Erich S. Almocera, PhD, and Asst. Prof. Sherelyn A. Evangelio, MSc, for providing valuable insights that contributed to the publication of this study.
This milestone advances the DiWA Centerโs pillars of ๐๐ป๐ผ๐๐น๐ฒ๐ฑ๐ด๐ฒ ๐๐ฒ๐ป๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป and ๐๐ป๐ผ๐๐น๐ฒ๐ฑ๐ด๐ฒ ๐ง๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ป๐๐ณ๐ฒ๐ฟ & ๐ฆ๐ต๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ป๐ด by producing, disseminating, and translating locally grounded evidence into insights for disease surveillance and decision-making.

Last June 10-11, the DiWA Centerโwith Affiliate Dennis John Sumaylo, PhD, and Junior Extension Associate Joshua Merallesโrepresented the Mindanao academe sector at LOKALISASYON: National Multistakeholder Summit on Locally-Led DRRM. The event, which gathered representatives of different city LGUs, academe, CSOs, and the private sector, was held at the Citadines Roces in Quezon City.
Organized by the Philippine Preparedness Partnership (PHILPREP), the summit aimed to gather voices of stakeholders and establish a localized agenda for disaster risk reduction and management across the country. It featured UP Resilience Institute Executive Director Dr. Alfredo Mahar Francisco Lagmay, who highlighted the critical value of an all-encompasing and multisectoral approach to disaster risk reduction.
During the workshops, Dr. Sumaylo leveraged his expertise in risk and disaster communication and contributed suggestions on institutionalizing and formalizing the role of the academe within Davaoโs current DRRM landscapes. Mr. Meralles also served to communicate the voices of Davao & Surigao, ensuring that unique regional contexts and needs were integrated in the summit's presentation segments.
Recognizing that public health crises and infectious diseases frequently thrive in the aftermath of disasters, the DiWA Center shows full support to the agenda and vision of PHILPREP as it supports our core pillar of ๐๐ป๐ผ๐๐น๐ฒ๐ฑ๐ด๐ฒ ๐ฆ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฒ๐.
Cheers to more impactful partnerships towards a resilient Philippines! ๐ช

The DiWA Center, represented by Center Director Prof. May Anne E. Mata, PhD, and MIDSEA scholars SRA Ivy Grace M. Panogalinog and JRA Gessfer Dorado, joined the Modeling Infectious Diseases in Southeast Asia (MIDSEA) Summer School 2026 held on June 7โ12, 2026, in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia.
A key highlight of Prof. Mataโs participation was her plenary workshop, โFrom Projections to Decisions: Operations Research as the Decision Layer of Infectious Disease Modeling,โ where she shared how operations research can bridge infectious disease projections and practical public health decisions.
Meanwhile, Panogalinog joined Track 4: Modeling Heterogeneity, while Dorado joined Track 2: Inference. During the poster sessions, Panogalinog presented โWavelet Cross-Correlation Analysis of Influenza-Like Illnesses and Short-Term Weather Variability in Davao City,โ while Dorado presented โShort-Term Delayed Effects of Non-Pharmaceutical Interventions on COVID-19 Spread in a Highly Urbanized City in Southern Philippines during the Pre-Vaccination Period.โ
The Philippine team will host the next MIDSEA Summer School and the International Workshop on Mathematical Biology (IWOMB), creating another platform for regional learning and collaboration.
This engagement advances the DiWA Centerโs pillars of Knowledge Generation, Knowledge Transfer & Sharing, and Knowledge Application through research, regional exchange, and evidence-informed decision-making for a more health-resilient Mindanao and beyond.
