Yang Chengfu, the great tai chi teacher, stressed that no amount of good instruction can substitute for showing up on the mat every day. Without daily personal training, you remain inexpert, lacking the skill that only comes from consistent practice.
Cheng Man-ch'ing (a master student of Yang Chengfu) compared skill-building to stacking paper one sheet at a time. Each day's practice seems negligible, but over years it becomes an enormous accumulation.
Master Wang Hai-Jun likened tai chi to pedaling a bicycle uphill: stop, and you roll backward. He pointed to the old saying that a single missed day sets you back ten.
And, Confucius: "It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop."
