Our energy choices have a direct impact on ocean health. Fossil fuel emissions drive marine heatwaves, disrupt food webs, and reduce biodiversity (๐บ๐‘œ๐‘š๐‘’๐‘  ๐‘’๐‘ก ๐‘Ž๐‘™., 2024). Rising ocean temperatures alter nutrient cycling and carbon uptakeโ€”undermining the oceanโ€™s ability to act as a climate buffer (๐‘†๐‘Ž๐‘™๐‘Ž ๐‘’๐‘ก ๐‘Ž๐‘™., 2024).

But thereโ€™s hope in blue carbon. Mangroves, seagrasses, and salt marshes trap atmospheric COโ‚‚ for centuries, supporting both climate goals and marine life (๐ท๐‘–๐‘›๐‘Ž๐‘˜๐‘Ž๐‘Ÿ๐‘˜๐‘ข๐‘š๐‘Ž๐‘Ÿ ๐‘’๐‘ก ๐‘Ž๐‘™., 2026). Protecting these habitats prevents stored carbon from being released back into the atmosphere (Regional Studies in Marine Science, 2025).
