SUCCESS ON NATIVE CATFISH INDUCED SPAWNING!

MSU-Maguindanao, through MOST-BARMM as funding agency has successfully conducted its first trial run on native catfish induced spawning. The experimental set-up is located at MAFAR-ROS Maguindanao, MSU-Maguindanao compound.

The special project of MSU-Maguindanao is expected to conduct experiments on broodstock development, induced spawning, larval rearing and growth performance of Native catfish in order to reintroduce the species in Philippines aquaculture.

Induced spawning is one of the common methods to stimulate ovulation in fish through hormone injection. Followed by stripping, milt extraction and artificial insemination and fertilization procedures.

A simple progress yet significant steps towards the conservation of the species.

Native Catfish Induced Spawning!

Healthy male and female broodstock were selected for induced spawning. Ovaprim was used for hormonal injection. After ovulation @ 16-20 hours, different procedures were facilitated based on SEAFDEC/AQD's procedure as follows:

1. Milt extraction
2. Stripping of ovulated eggs
3. Artificial insemination for fertilization
4. Incubation for hatching (flow through using water recirculating system)
5. Natural food preparation (Daphnia magna)
6. Feeding the larvae
7. Water exchange
