In the aftermath of the series of seismic activities that jolted Eastern Mindanao in recent days, the GNHS-SHS DRRM Team, in collaboration with the MDRRMC and LGU Arakan, conducted a post-earthquake inspection and damage assessment of the SHS buildings last Monday, December 4, 2023.

Based on the assessment headed by Engr. Jerry Domaoan, the buildings were found to have multiple hairline cracks or surface cracks on the walls. It was also recorded that the ceilings need additional support to ensure their structural stability.

Overall, there were no significant structural damages identified.

Given that the jolting was also felt in the locality and that one of the school's high-rise buildings is located on an elevated site, conducting this building inspection is essential to ensure the safety of the students, faculty, and staff.

Moreover, 2 classes from the 3rd floor of the 3-storey SHS building were transferred to its 2nd floor as aftershocks continue to rattle.

The school's prompt actions in responding to these issues highlight its commitment to keep its students safe and secure.

Our heartfelt gratitude to the Municipal Engineering Office of Arakan for the assessment of the damages left by the earthquake. We also sincerely thank the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council for the prompt response and immediate assistance.

These cracks are barely visible cracks that can appear on surfaces like walls or ceilings. It is extremely thin and has a width of less than 0.1mm. They are so fine that they resemble a strand of hair. Hairline cracks often happen naturally over time due to factors like changes in temperature, settling of a building, or the drying process of materials. While they are generally considered normal wear and tear, it's important to keep an eye on them. In most cases, they are superficial and don't pose a serious threat to the structure, but regular checks and maintenance can help prevent any potential issues.

These cracks are small, thin cracks that can develop on surfaces like walls or floors over time. They occur when materials, like concrete or plaster, naturally shrink as they dry or cure. Picture the way mud might crack as it dries, and you have a basic idea of what shrinkage cracks look like. While these cracks are common and usually not a big concern, keeping an eye on them and addressing any significant widening can help maintain the overall quality of a structure.

These cracks are small cracks that may appear in buildings as a result of the natural settling or sinking of the structure into the ground over time. Imagine a house gradually adjusting to its foundation, and these cracks can form. They are typically thin and may appear around doors, windows, or in the corners of walls. While these cracks are a normal part of a building's aging process, monitoring them and addressing any notable changes can help ensure the ongoing stability of the structure.

These cracks are more serious and significant fissures in a building that can affect its stability and safety. These cracks are often wider and deeper than superficial cracks, and they may be found in critical areas such as load-bearing walls or foundation. Unlike smaller cracks caused by settling or minor movements, structural cracks may indicate more profound issues that need attention. Regular inspections and prompt repairs are crucial to maintaining the overall integrity of the building.
