When 𝗦𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗳𝗳 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗯𝗮𝘆𝗮𝗻 𝗔𝗯𝗮𝘀 walked into COMELEC headquarters in 2017 as its new chairperson, he was 𝟯𝟴 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗹𝗱, from 𝗖𝗼𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗮𝘁𝗼 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝘆, and 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗹𝗶𝗺. None of that had ever happened before in the entire history of the Philippines' electoral body.

Not the youngest. Not from Mindanao. Not a Muslim. All three, at the same time, in one person. That's the kind of first that doesn't get repeated.

But what's easy to miss in all those headlines about firsts is the actual work. Before Abas ever became chair, he was the guy managing the shipping of 92,000 vote-counting machines and 56 million ballots across the archipelago for the 2016 elections. Not the most glamorous job in the building, but the kind of work that tells you what someone is actually made of. The 2016 elections ended up being among 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆, with 96 percent of precinct results in within 12 hours.

When he was elevated to chairperson, critics raised his family connection to Mohagher Iqbal, the MILF's chief peace negotiator, as a potential conflict of interest. Abas's response was simple and clean: he formally inhibited himself from anything related to the Bangsamoro Basic Law. No drama, no argument. Just a clear line drawn.

And then, in January and February of 2019, he oversaw the Bangsamoro Autonomy Plebiscite, the vote that finally gave the Bangsamoro people the political homeland they had been negotiating toward for decades. The BARMM was born under his watch. A Muslim election chief, administering the vote that established a Muslim region's autonomy, having already removed himself from anything that could compromise the process. That's not symbolism. That's governance.

He completed his full seven-year constitutional term in February 2022 and didn't hang around. He went home, opened a law practice, and then, in 2026, filed his candidacy for the 1st Parliamentary District of Cotabato City under the United Bangsamoro Justice Party. The first former COMELEC chairperson to run for the Bangsamoro Parliament. Still making firsts.

A home is more than just a roof over one's head—it is a symbol of dignity, security, and a better future.

Under the leadership of Al Haj Murad Ebrahim, the Bangsamoro Transition Government strengthened housing and resettlement efforts to provide safe and permanent homes for former combatants, internally displaced persons, and vulnerable families across the region.

Through the Ministry of Human Settlements and Development's Resettlement Housing Program, 1,107 housing units were completed, while 2,561 additional units were under construction during the same reporting period. The Ministry of Social Services and Development also provided permanent shelters to 235 families through its Bahay Program. These accomplishments contributed to a 330% increase in completed housing units compared to the previous years.

Beyond infrastructure, these initiatives represent a commitment to restoring stability, rebuilding communities, and translating the gains of peace into tangible improvements in the lives of the Bangsamoro people.

Layunin ng pagtitipon na palawakin ang kamalayan ng bawat botante upang makagawa ng mga pasyang nakabatay sa katotohanan at hindi sa maling impormasyon.

"Huwag tayong magpadala sa mga haka-haka o sa mga nagsasabing ang pakikibahagi sa demokratikong proseso ay hindi na bahagi ng ating pakikibaka."

Ang isang impormadong mamamayan ay may mahalagang papel sa pagpapanatili ng isang malaya, patas, at makabuluhang halalan. Sa sama-samang pagkilos at responsableng pakikilahok, mas mapatatag natin ang kinabukasan ng Bangsamoro.
