Artificial Intelligence in Education: A Powerful Tool with Real Risks
"Artificial Intelligence" is becoming more and more common in today’s classrooms and social media. Students are relying on Artificial Intelligence-powered tools for research, writing, and even studying. Some believe Artificial Intelligence is a danger to the classroom because it can encourage cheating and reduce critical thinking. However, Artificial Intelligence should not be banned from classrooms and educational settings because it has many advantages and disadvantages.
Firstly, Artificial Intelligence has many advantages because it can improve and increase knowledge for students. Artificial Intelligence-powered tools can help students understand complicated ideas and even help them organize their thoughts for school assignments. According to UNESCO (2023), Artificial Intelligence has the potential to improve and increase knowledge for students because it can provide tailored learning and increase access to educational resources. This is significant because it can help students who are weak in certain areas because they can use Artificial Intelligence-powered tools for help.
Secondly, Artificial Intelligence is changing the way the workplace will look in the future. With the advancement of technology, many jobs will involve Artificial Intelligence and technology. According to the World Economic Forum (2023), Artificial Intelligence is becoming more and more significant for future jobs. Allowing students to use Artificial Intelligence-powered tools is significant because it is increasing digital literacy and technology awareness among young generations.
There are many disadvantages to Artificial Intelligence-powered tools for classrooms and educational settings. One significant disadvantage is that Artificial Intelligence-powered tools are encouraging cheating among students. Some students are using Artificial Intelligence-powered tools to do their school assignments and homework, which is reducing critical thinking and independent ideas among young generations. According to the OECD (2021), Artificial Intelligence-powered tools are reducing critical thinking and independent ideas among young generations because they are overusing these tools for school assignments and homework.
Another concern is the dissemination of misinformation and bias. This is because AI responds to available data, which may be false or biased. A study conducted by the Human-Centered AI Institute at Stanford (2023) revealed that AI sometimes offers false and misleading information. Students who only use AI-generated content may inadvertently disseminate false information.
Another concern is privacy and security. Most AI programs gather information about the user to improve their services. In the absence of guidelines on the use and protection of such information, the privacy and security of students are compromised. This calls for concern about the ethics of technology companies regarding educational information.
In light of these concerns, educational institutions should focus on teaching the responsible use of AI rather than banning it. This is because, by doing so, they will be able to teach their students how to verify information and use AI as a supplement to their critical thinking. This will help the students use technology responsibly and productively.
In conclusion, artificial intelligence is neither entirely good for educational institutions nor entirely bad. It is a powerful tool for enhancing and improving the educational experience for the student, but it also comes with its challenges, such as academic dishonesty, dissemination of false information, and privacy and security concerns. What is needed is for educational institutions and students to learn to use it responsibly and judiciously so that it can be used for the enhancement and improvement of the educational experience without diminishing the value and significance of human creativity and effort.
