Reflections Beyond the Reel: The 5th AHD Film Festival

Inside the quiet halls of Prince Express Inn in Gairan, Bogo City, Cebu last July 31, 2026, cinema became a powerful lens into the shadows and triumphs of human resilience. The 5th AHD Film Festival brought stories off the screen and straight into the heart, centering on the theme "Ang Bug-at nga Lulan sa Kagahapon: Navigating the life of PLHIV and the reality of Human Risk."

Through raw performances, poignant dialogue, and visual storytelling, each film unveiled the unspoken emotional weight carried by people living with HIV, turning personal struggles into shared moments of empathy, awareness, and profound understanding.

As the lights came up on another successful year, the festival left a lasting impression on everyone presentโ€”a vital reminder that behind every statistic is a human story, and that empathy remains our strongest bridge toward healing and acceptance.

Analyn, a seventeen-year-old student, accidentally discovers her mother's HIV test results and medication while cleaning their house. Shocked and overwhelmed, she is consumed by fear and begins to question everything she thought she knew about HIV. Unsure of how to confront her mother, Analyn keeps the discovery to herself until a conversation with her friends exposes the myths, stigma, and misinformation surrounding HIV.

As she learns the facts, Analyn gradually realizes that fear often stems from misunderstanding rather than truth. Determined to seek answers, Analyn confronts her mother, who reveals the painful sacrifices she made after becoming a widow. Forced into s*x work to provide for her daughter, she unknowingly acquired HIV despite taking precautions. For years, she kept her diagnosis a secret, fearing her daughter's rejection more than the disease itself. Moved by her mother's courage, resilience, and unconditional love, Analyn lets go of her prejudice and embraces her mother with compassion, realizing that the greatest burden of HIV is not the virus itself, but the stigma surrounding it.

HUPAY follows the story of Al, an 18-year-old young man, born with HIV through mother-to-child transmission. Even though he keeps taking his antiretroviral therapy faithfully and he lives a healthy life under the care of his aunt, Marisa, he still has to face constant judgment, discrimination ,and those hurtful rumors from people who just donโ€™t understand HIV.

Itโ€™s like the stigma slowly sinks into him, and then Al starts questioning his own worth, while blaming his late mother for what happened to him. When he is finally forced to face the truth, Marisa tells him about the painful sacrifices Alโ€™s mother made just to keep him alive. That moment helps Al see her with compassion instead of resentment, and not just as a reason but as a person who tried. Later on, months pass and Al receives life-changing news about his viral load is now undetectable. This shows, clearly, that effective treatment lets people living with HIV live long, healthy lives, and it also prevents s*xual transmission (U=U).
