Mining in the Philippines continues to pose serious environmental and social challenges despite existing laws like the Philippine Mining Act of 1995 (RA 7942), the Environmental Impact Assessment System (PD 1586), and the Indigenous Peoples' Rights Act of 1997 (RA 8371). While these frameworks mandate environmental safeguards and require Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) from Indigenous communities, many mining operations still proceed without genuine community approval—resulting in human rights violations and displacement. According to the DENR, toxic waste from mining has severely polluted water and soil, endangering public health. Forest and watershed degradation due to open-pit and large-scale mining also worsens climate vulnerability, increasing the risk of floods and landslides, especially in upland and Indigenous territories. ⚖️

DID YOU KNOW? 💡

The Philippines holds vast mineral wealth, yet 97% of what we extract is exported, with minimal local benefit.

Foreign industries profit, while communities face the environmental cost.

Mining must be transparent, accountable, and people-centered. Let’s push for policies that make our resources truly ours. 🌿

While mining brings economic benefits, these are often short-term and concentrated among a few stakeholders. The environmental and social costs, however, are long-term, widespread, and frequently irreversible. Mining drives deforestation, pollution, and displacement of Indigenous Communities. To make it worse, the long term effects of mining heighten the impacts of natural disasters. It’s time to take action. Mining must benefit the people, not just the powerful. Demand transparency, environmental accountability, and respect for human rights. Let’s push for responsible mining that works with nature, not against it.

Profit fades. The damage stays.
It’s time to make mining responsible, fair, and for the people. 🌱
