Onboard Training Office (OBTO) – UC-METC

In accordance with the University of Cebu’s official advisory, please be informed that classes across all campuses are suspended from May 6 to 8, 2026, in line with the conduct of the 48th ASEAN Summit.

Furthermore, the Onboard Training Office (OBTO) will be CLOSED starting 12:00 PM today, May 6, 2026.

All students are advised to be properly guided and to complete any urgent or necessary transactions within the remaining office hours.

D/C Andre Louise Emmanuel Jaboneta, from the University of Cebu – Maritime Education and Training Center took part as an online paper presenter in the Panday-Kabatiran 2026: 1st International Multidisciplinary Student Research Conference held on May 4–5, 2026.

Organized by Rizal Technological University, the international conference gathered student researchers from various academic disciplines through a hybrid setup. Partner institutions from both local and international communities were able to participate virtually, promoting wider academic collaboration and exchange of ideas.

With the theme “Student Research at the Forefront of Sustainable, Inclusive, and Innovation-Driven Development,” the event provided a venue for students to present their research, receive scholarly feedback, and engage in interdisciplinary discussions. The conference also featured multiple parallel sessions, each showcasing a diverse range of student-led studies.

During the event, the UC-METC researcher presented the qualitative study titled “Leaving the Waves: A Maritime Cadet’s Journey Away from Seafaring.”

His co-authors are the following: D/C Raphael Laurence Bonggo, D/C Joyce James Menchavez, D/C Allyn Luther Ramos and D/C Mar Clester Sabatin together with their esteemed research adviser, Ms. Iris Q. Heslop.

The research centers on the growing concern of maritime cadets leaving the profession shortly after entering it. By focusing on the lived experiences of a cadet, the study examines key factors such as work-life imbalance, career expectations versus reality, and personal motivations that influence the decision to step away from seafaring.

Presented through an online platform, the study was evaluated alongside other research works across disciplines, highlighting its relevance within broader conversations on workforce sustainability and career transitions.

Participation in the conference enabled the researcher to gain insights from various fields, refine research communication skills, and build confidence in presenting academic work on an international platform. It also opened opportunities to contribute to discussions addressing challenges within the maritime industry, particularly in retaining future seafarers.

This participation shows UC-METC’s commitment to fostering research-driven learning and encouraging students to engage in scholarly initiatives that address pressing industry concerns.
