One of the many milestones the LGBTQ++ community in the Philippines has achieved was the approval of the SOGIE bill which prohibits discrimination on the basis of s*xual orientation or gender identity, a huge step into the right direction for the community.

Sexual Orientation is different from other components of s*x and gender, including biological s*x (the anatomical, physiological and genetic characteristics associated with being male or female), gender identity (internal sense of self), and social gender role (the cultural norms, roles and/or expectations).
Sexual orientation is frequently described as if it were a purely personal trait, similar to biological s*x, gender identity, or age. Because s*xual orientation is defined in terms of connections with others, this viewpoint is incomplete. People display their s*xual orientation through interactions with others, such as holding hands or kissing. As a result, s*xual orientation is inextricably linked to intense human relationships that satisfy deeply felt desires for love, attachment, and intimacy. These relationships include nons*xual physical affection between partners, similar objectives and beliefs, mutual support, and continued commitment, in addition to s*xual actions. As a result, s*xual orientation is more than just a personal feature of an individual. Rather, one's s*xual orientation identifies the type of people with whom one is most likely to find the gratifying and successful romantic connections that are a fundamental component of many people's personal identity.

Gender and Sexual Orientation are two independent yet related characteristics of oneself.
Gender is a personal trait (how we perceive ourselves), whereas Sexual Orientation is an interpersonal trait (who we are physically, emotionally, and/or romantically attracted to).
Why is it so important and critical to distinguish these two concepts? Because when we confuse gender with s*xual orientation, we are somehow or likely making an assumption about a young individual that has nothing to do with who they are.

This week, Bahaghari.org would like to discuss pronouns. There are a plethora of pronouns in use today, and we wanted to highlight a handful of the more popular ones you'll hear or use in everyday discussions.
Above all, respects everyone's pronouns and uses the pronouns that people use when introducing themselves. People feel safer, more noticed, and respected when they use the correct pronouns.

As a second part to our previous post, we, BAHAGHARI.org, will be highlighting the most prevalent challenges the LGBTQ+ youth and generally, the community faces. We will be discussing the very first challenge the LGBTQ+ community faces. Which is :
DEROGATORY AND DISCRIMINATION ON THE LGBTQ+ YOUTH
Schools should be safe places for everyone. But in the Philippines, students who are le***an, gay, bis*xual, and transgender (LGBT) too often find that their schooling experience is marred by bullying, discrimination, lack of access to LGBT-related information, and in some cases, physical or s*xual assault. These abuses can cause deep and lasting harm and curtail studentsโ right to education, protected under Philippine and international law (โJust Let Us Be,โ 2017).
