LOOK | To boost journalistic skills: Lightkeepers join SunStar News Writing Workshop

Three campus journalists and a coach took part in the News Writing Workshop offered by the SunStar Junior Journo Program at SM Seaside City Cebu yesterday, April 25, aiming to strengthen their campus journalism skills.

English news writing coach Contessa T. Apura, alongside Karla Apura, Cathlyn Alesna, and Selwyn Noel Dialimas, represented Banwag Publication together with fellow student journalists from different schools across Cebu Province.

SunStar Publishing Director for Editorial Oversight and Corporate Affairs Nestor Ramirez facilitated the session, walking participants through the values and core elements of journalism before transitioning into the fundamentals of news writing.

Ramirez also discussed the factors that establish a story’s newsworthiness, as well as key considerations and common pitfalls in crafting both the lead and the body, emphasizing effective and ethical reporting practices.

A mock press conference followed, allowing participants to raise questions to gain a deeper understanding of the story. They were then tasked with producing a news article based on the gathered information.

SunStar Cebu continues to implement the Junior Journo Program in schools across the province, featuring a series of workshops conducted over four consecutive Saturdays for each category.

The News Writing Workshop began on April 18, with upcoming sessions covering Feature Writing, Photojournalism, Sports Writing, Radio Broadcasting, and TV Broadcasting.

JUST IN | First Day as Gelacian: Mam Dorina steps in as new school head

Gelacians warmly welcomed Ma. Dorina Villamor Sarona as she officially took her first step as the new school principal of Gelacio C. Babao Sr. Memorial National High School (GCBSMNHS) today, April 14, 2026.

The welcome program was filled with lively dances, heartfelt messages, and photo opportunities, creating a mix of laughter and touching moments among those in attendance.

Sorona previously served at Ocaña National High School, where fellow Ocañan teachers gave her a heartfelt send-off and joined in the welcoming celebration.

GCBSMNHS Teachers and student leaders received her with open arms, expressing their support as she begins her leadership in the institution.

As part of the celebration, Gelacio transitioned one of its hashtags from 'FlyHighWithRye' to 'SoarMoreWithMamDor,' symbolizing the beginning of a new era in educational leadership.

NEWS | Carrying the banner of Region 7: Gillian pens her way to the Nationals

English Feature Writer Gillian Grace Reyes of Banwag Publication advances to the National Schools Press Conference (NSPC) 2026, representing Region VII - Central Visayas under the guidance of her coach, Concepcion Boltron.

With this achievement, she leads Gelacio C. Babao Sr. Memorial National High School to the nationals for the second time, following Megan Repollo’s qualification in NSPC 2024.

NSPC 2026 is being held in Ormoc City, Leyte from April 12 to 17, bringing together campus journalists from across the Philippines to showcase their journalistic prowess through a rigorous selection process.

To qualify for the NSPC, participants must first place at least in the Top 3 at the Division level and become champions at the Regional Schools Press Conferences, making it a challenging feat for many campus journalists.

NEWS | Gelacians bid farewell to their school principal

On the last day of the school year 2025–2026, teachers and students of Gelacio C. Babao Sr. Memorial National High School bid a heartfelt goodbye to their principal, Ryan B. Redoblado, who led the school for nearly three years.

A tearful send-off ceremony marked the occasion where teachers from all grade levels expressed their gratitude by giving gifts and sharing touching messages to honor Sir Ryan’s leadership and dedication.

Selected students also delivered farewell messages, reflecting on the impact he had on their school life.

The ceremony concluded with the release of balloons into the sky, each carrying the message “Fly High with Rye,” one of the official hashtags of Gelacio C. Babao Sr. MNHS, symbolizing the community’s warm wishes for their beloved principal’s future endeavors.

NEWS | Pathfinder of the Next Generation: Valedictorian alumna guides graduates with 3 life lessons for success

Class Valedictorian of Batch 2008–2009 and now a licensed Civil Engineer, Engr. Yvonnie Bate Rosas, shared her lifelong lessons with the graduates, highlighting three key insights she believes will help them succeed in the future.

She described these as lessons shaped by time—principles that open opportunities to reach milestones and achieve greater heights.

According to Rosas, “Success cannot be measured by money or by what you have achieved in life. It cannot be measured by gold or cars. True success lies in creating an impact on society, contributing to its welfare, and changing lives.”

𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗙𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀

“Your discouragement could be your fuel, your guide to improving yourself in the future,” Rosas said.

She cited Hidilyn Diaz, the Philippines’ first Olympic gold medalist, who competed in the 2008 Beijing Olympics but did not win, before ultimately claiming gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics—a victory 12 years in the making.

“Sa iyang kapildihan pag 2008, niundang ba siya? Niingon ba siya nga, ‘Ay, dili na lang ko oy, mangalsa na lang kog bugas?’ Wala, nipadayon siya sa iyang journey.”

Rosas noted that when graduates decide on their career paths, others may discourage them. “Some will say, ‘Sure ka mag-doctor ka? Basin mamatay imong pasyente…’ If you listen to discouragement, you will never become a doctor.”

She urged students to turn discouragement into inspiration, using it as fuel to prove to themselves that they can become who they aspire to be. She emphasized that success should not be pursued to prove others wrong, but to create a meaningful impact on society.

𝗡𝗼 𝗠𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗻 𝗜𝘀𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱

“Your future success requires collaboration and support from others,” Rosas said, stressing the importance of choosing the right circle in college.

“If you associate with people who are happy-go-lucky or only interested in parties, you will neglect your goals. But if you surround yourself with hardworking peers, you will be motivated to study and grow.”

She also reminded graduates to honor their parents, noting that financial support is earned through hard work and sacrifice, and to remember the teachers and coaches who nurtured their skills.

“Always look back on how you started, and whom you started with,” she concluded.

Rosas explained that paying it forward means extending kindness to others instead of directly returning it to the person who helped you, creating a chain reaction of goodwill.

She encouraged students to remember that youth is no barrier to helping others. Small daily gestures, volunteering, acts of service, offering seats on public transport, or donating food, clothes, and toys to shelters are all meaningful contributions.

She also emphasized sharing skills, mentoring juniors, and passing on professional knowledge, noting that such acts not only benefit others but also strengthen one’s professional network and reputation.

The valedictorian predecessor ended her speech with a quote by Albert Einstein: “Try not to become a person of success, but rather, try to become a person of value.”

NEWS | Class of 2026 celebrates 6 years of High School, marks the beginning of college life

Graduates of the Class of 2026 from Gelacio C. Babao Sr. Memorial National High School are ready to lead with competence and character, true to this year’s theme, having completed six years of Junior and Senior High School and now embarking on a new chapter in their educational journey.

The graduates culminated their years of hard work during the 5th Graduation Ceremony held on March 30, 2026, at the school covered court, where the achievements and milestones of over 200 students were recognized and celebrated.

Among the graduates, Gillian Grace Reyes from the Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) Department emerged as the highest honor student, receiving multiple recognitions for her outstanding performance in various disciplines, competitions, and organizations.

The 10 students with the highest grades received cash incentive awards sponsored by Bridgette Bardinas Babao. One student was awarded ₱10,000, another with ₱5,000, one with ₱3,000, and seven students with ₱1,000 each.

M. Lhuillier Financial Services, Inc. awarded insurance packages to the Top 3 graduates: Gillian received an insurance coverage worth ₱100,000, Francine Jane Garces, STEM Academic Achiever, ₱70,000, and Marc Vincent Del Campo, STEM Academic Achiever, ₱40,000.

Additionally, Lance Joey Madrona, HUMSS Academic Achiever, was selected by the University of Cebu as one of their Presidential Academic Scholars in recognition of his academic achievements. The award grants him free tuition and school fees, a book allowance, and a monthly stipend.

DCCCO Multipurpose Cooperative also granted awards to selected academic achievers.

With the theme, “Filipino Graduates: Prepared to Lead with Competence and Character,” the school invited guest speaker Engr. Yvonnie Bate Rosas, an alumna from the Class of 2009, to inspire the graduates and prepare them for the next stage of life.

The graduates performed “Next in Line” by AfterImage as their graduation song, where the lines “What has life to offer me when I grow old?” reflected their mixed feelings of excitement and apprehension about the future.

The day after the graduation ceremony, students returned to school for the distribution of cards, officially marking the end of the School Year 2025–2026.

NEWS | DURING CVIRAA 2026: Carla secures bronze in Taekwondo

During the Central Visayas Regional Athletics Association (CViRAA) Meet 2026, Carla O. Quindala earned a bronze medal in the Taekwondo Secondary Girls Category 4.

Quindala delivered a commendable performance, earning a spot on the podium and contributing to the school’s growing list of achievements in the regional meet.

She was coached by Orlene G. Canape, with Jeanly Pearl Dazo-Lawas assisting in her training and preparation. Katrina Ortega served as chaperone during the event.

The CVIRAA 2026 continues to develop the skills and determination of student-athletes across the region.

NEWS | Uriel sprints to excellence, bags silvers at CViRAA

Uriel Gabriel O. Sabellon owned the tracks as he competed in the Athletic Secondary Boys 100-meter Run and claimed silver medal at the Central Visayas Regional Athletics Association (CViRAA) Meet 2026.

Representing Carcar City Division and Gelacio C. Babao Sr. Memorial National High School, he dashed toward glory with his coach, Analyn T. Minor.

Sabellon clinched another silver in 4x100m Relay with his team from other schools in Carcar City, including Clarence Kent R. Traya, Clint Jared L. Tanudtanud, and Niño Rey M. Satuita.

CViRAA 2026 was held in Naga City, Cebu on March 21-27, 2026, participated by atheletes from 12 divisions regionwide.

Uriel Gabriel recieved an Athletics Award during the 5th Graduation Ceremony held in the school covered court on March 30, 2026.
