Tarlac Agricultural Universityโs College of Arts and Sciences once again demonstrated its research excellence after students from the Department of Psychology and the Department of Development Communication secured the top two honors in the Search for the Best Undergraduate Thesis for Academic Year 2025โ2026.
Organized by the Department of Research and Development, the competition was held on May 14, 2026, and recognized outstanding undergraduate research that reflects scholarly rigor, innovation, and relevance to contemporary social issues.
Claiming First Place in the Social Sciences Category were Psychology students Maylene C. Fabros, Jackielyn L. Manggante, and Mica Lorraine S. Sicangco for their thesis titled, โBuhay sa Likod ng Lente: Understanding the Lived Experiences of Female Students Engaged in Online S*x Work in the Philippines.โ
Guided by their adviser, Dr. Benny S. Soliman, the study examined the hidden realities faced by female students engaged in online s*x work, shedding light on a sensitive issue often overlooked in academic and public discourse. Dr. Soliman added that the same paper was also named a finalist in the Best Undergraduate Thesis Search of the Psychological Association of the Philippines โ Junior Affiliates, highlighting its significance beyond the university level.
Securing Second Place was Kathlyn Joy and her research team from the Department of Development Communication for the thesis, โSounding Out Democracy: Co-creating an Audio-Based Votersโ Education Toolkit for Blind and Visually Impaired Youth.โ
Under the mentorship of Nelmar A. Mallari, LPT, MDC, the study addressed the need for inclusive civic education by developing an accessible audio-based toolkit designed to empower blind and visually impaired youth with the information they need to participate more fully in democratic processes.
The achievement of both departments highlights the breadth and depth of research being produced within the College of Arts and Sciences. From tackling complex social realities to promoting inclusive communication and civic participation, the winning theses demonstrated how undergraduate research can serve as a powerful tool for understanding and addressing real-world concerns.
More than a competition, the Search for the Best Undergraduate Thesis celebrates the dedication of students and advisers who transform academic inquiry into work that informs, inspires, and creates impact beyond the classroom.
For the College of Arts and Sciences, this yearโs results stand as a testament to its enduring commitment to research excellence and to nurturing young scholars whose ideas have the potential to contribute meaningfully to society.

Sarah Mae M. DOLOT, a mental health advocate and a faculty member of the College of Arts and Sciences - Department of Psychology, secures Rank 4 nationwide with an impressive 93.81% rating in the Certified Trauma Support Practitioner (CTSPโข) Qualifying Examination, recently administered by Livence Mental Health โ Center for Continuing Education.
The certification exam, held on February 28, 2026, follows an intensive two-day training conducted via Zoom, gathering participants from across the country under Batch 002-2026. Despite the rigorous preparation and evaluation process, the batch achieves an overall passing rate of 80.00%, highlighting both the challenge and significance of the program.
Dolotโs achievement stands out not only for its academic excellence but also for what it representsโa growing commitment among Filipino professionals to become trauma-informed and community-ready practitioners.
In todayโs context, where mental health concerns are increasingly recognized yet still stigmatized, the role of trauma support practitioners becomes more vital. The CTSPโข program, while not a licensure for psychotherapy, equips individuals with the foundational knowledge and ethical orientation to support individuals experiencing trauma within appropriate professional boundaries.
For Dolot, this milestone signals more than personal success. It reflects a broader movement toward strengthening community-based mental health support systems, particularly in local settings like Tarlac where access to psychological services remains limited.
Livence Mental Health, a PRC-accredited psychological clinic and training center, emphasizes that the certification empowers individuals to contribute meaningfully to trauma-informed care, promote awareness, and help reduce stigma surrounding mental health.
As more professionals step forward to undergo such training, the impact extends beyond individual recognition. It builds a network of advocates capable of fostering safer, more responsive communities.
This achievement serves as both inspiration and invitationโproof that advancing mental health support begins with informed, compassionate individuals willing to take the first step.
Congratulations, Ma'am Sarah!

With new knowledge forged through international collaboration and cultural exchange, the delegation from Tarlac Agricultural University has returned home following its participation in the 2026 CommTECH Insight Camp hosted by Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember in Surabaya.
Leading the representation of the College of Arts and Sciences were Sherwin S. Alar and Jehoshapat L. Rombaoa, who both took part in Stream 2: SDGs Innovations in the Community and Technological Camp held from February 9 to 20, 2026. Their participation marked a significant step in the Universityโs continuing pursuit of international engagement, academic collaboration, and sustainable innovation.

At the forefront of the delegation, Dr. Alar represented TAU in official meetings with ITS administrators and academic leaders, opening discussions on potential institutional collaborations in research, instruction, and community-based initiatives. His presence underscored the Universityโs commitment to strengthening international academic networks and creating opportunities for global learning among TAUians.
Dr. Alarโs involvement in the CommTECH program reflects a sustained dedication to intercultural exchange. Having previously joined the program in 2022, he was recognized for his creative excellence through the Best Batik Design Awardโan experience that deepened his advocacy for global exposure in higher education. Despite the demands and challenges of international travel, he continues to champion programs that connect local academic communities with global perspectives.
Through his leadership, the delegationโs participation extended beyond attendance; it became a strategic engagement aimed at building long-term partnerships and expanding institutional visibility on the international stage.
๐๐๐๐ซ๐ง๐ข๐ง๐ ๐๐๐ซ๐จ๐ฌ๐ฌ ๐๐จ๐ซ๐๐๐ซ๐ฌ
For Rombaoa, the experience proved both academically enriching and personally transformative. He shared that he arrived in Indonesia with a clear intentionโto actively participate and learn about the Sustainable Development Goals. However, the program offered far more than expected.
Immersed in a diverse international environment, he engaged with participants from various nations, exchanging ideas and collaborating on community-oriented technological innovations. The experience allowed him to witness how sustainability challenges are approached across cultures, highlighting both shared concerns and unique perspectives shaped by local realities.
He described the opportunity to work alongside individuals from different cultural backgrounds as one of the most meaningful aspects of the program. Beyond academic sessions and structured activities, the cultural component of the camp fostered deeper understanding, mutual respect, and a sense of global responsibility.
Rombaoa expressed heartfelt gratitude to the University administration, the External Linkages and International Affairs Office, his family and friends, and the ITS community for their support and encouragement throughout the journey.

The delegationโs participation reflects TAUโs broader institutional vision of producing globally competent graduates equipped to respond to contemporary challenges. By engaging in programs that combine sustainability education with intercultural dialogue, the University continues to expand its academic reach while reinforcing its commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals.
The CommTECH Insight Camp provided a platform not only for learning but also for partnership-buildingโan avenue through which ideas can evolve into collaborative initiatives that benefit both local and international communities.

Now back in the Philippines, the impact of the delegationโs experience extends beyond the duration of the program. The knowledge gained, professional networks formed, and collaborative possibilities explored contribute to TAUโs growing role in global academic engagement.
More than a journey abroad, the experience stands as a testament to the transformative power of education that transcends bordersโwhere leadership, learning, and cultural understanding converge to illuminate pathways toward sustainable development.
As TAU continues to strengthen its presence in the international academic community, the return of its representatives signals not an end, but the beginning of new opportunities for collaboration, innovation, and shared progress.

In a quiet classroom where ideas once lived only on paper, a vision from Caroline N. Gabis has grown into a movement now recognized on the global stage. A sustainability initiative led by students of Tarlac Agricultural University has been officially registered by UNESCO as part of the worldwide observance of the International Day of Light 2026.
Titled โRadiance of Responsibility: Illuminating Eco-Literacy for Global Sustainability,โ the project bridges science, environmental awareness, and community engagement. Running from February 18 to May 16, 2026 in Tarlac, the initiative brings students beyond traditional classroom learning into a broader, global conversation on sustainability.
At the heart of the project is experiential learningโan approach that transforms knowledge into action. Under Ms. Gabisโ guidance, students from BSP 2B, BSIT 1A, 1B, and 1C BSGE 2B, and BSGE 4 actively participate in eco-literacy activities that connect the science of illumination with ecological responsibility.
Rather than limiting education to lectures and readings, the program encourages students to engage directly with real-world environmental issues. Through collaborative activities and community involvement, learners explore how lightโboth as a scientific phenomenon and a symbolโcan inspire sustainable thinking and responsible action.
โRadiance of Responsibility is about empowering communities to see sustainability as illuminationโguiding us toward a brighter, more responsible future,โ Ms. Gabis shared.
The projectโs inclusion in UNESCOโs international platform places TAU among institutions worldwide that celebrate the transformative role of light in science, culture, and sustainable development. This recognition affirms the universityโs commitment to advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals through education.
More importantly, the initiative highlights the vital role of Filipino students in global environmental advocacy. Their willingness to participate and contribute reflects a growing awareness that sustainability is not only a scientific concern but a shared social responsibility.

๐จ๐ซ๐ฐ๐๐ซ๐
โRadiance of Responsibilityโ is more than a programโit is a call to action. By linking ecological wisdom with the universal symbolism of light, the project encourages communities to rethink their relationship with the environment and with one another.
The initiative also extended appreciation through snack bouquets and baskets distributed to selected members of the university community, including security guards, janitors, drivers, librarians, IU personnel, faculty members under COS status
As students carry their learning beyond campus walls, the project demonstrates how education can illuminate not only minds, but futures. In a world facing urgent environmental challenges, a single spark of awareness can ignite meaningful changeโand in Tarlac, that light is already shining.
