Mersenne number history begins with Euclid studying numbers of the form 2^p - 1, which he proved generated perfect numbers, though these numbers are named for Marin Mersenne who made a famous conjecture in 1644 on which exponents p result in a prime number. Early Mersenne primes were known to the ancients, but the full verification of Mersenne's conjecture required centuries of mathematical development and the advent of computers, with the last of his predicted primes, 2^257 - 1, being confirmed in 1952 and the first few (Mersenne primes) M2, M3, M5, and M7 were known in antiquity.
Marin Mersenne (1588-1648)
1644:.
The French monk Marin Mersenne made a famous conjecture, proposing that Mersenne numbers 2^p - 1 would be prime for certain prime exponents p.
Mersenne's Conjecture:
He claimed primes would exist for p = 2, 3, 5, 7, 13, 17, 19, 31, 67, 127, and 257.
