‎HAPPY GRAMMAR - FRIDAY!!

Active Voice vs. Passive Voice

One important aspect of grammar is knowing when to use active voice and passive voice. Both are correct, but they create different tones in writing.

Active Voice – the subject performs the action.

Examples:
• The teacher explained the lesson.
• Maria baked a cake.

Passive Voice – the subject receives the action.

Examples:
• The lesson was explained by the teacher.
• A cake was baked by Maria.

Quick Tip: Use active voice for clearer and stronger sentences. Passive voice is useful when the doer of the action is unknown or less important.

Let’s Compare:
• Active: The police arrested the thief. (clear and direct)
• Passive: The thief was arrested. (focuses on the thief, not the police)

Mastering this difference will help you write with more precision and style.

Grammar Friday Tips!

Difference between Clauses and Phrase

A clause is a set of words that includes both a verb and a subject.

An independent clause expresses a complete thought and stand alone as a sentence.

Example:
I am hungry.
He is feeling unwell yesterday.

Whilst, a dependent clause does not express a complete thought or idea and cannot stand by itself. It must be joined with an independent clause to form a complete sentence. Dependent clause commonly begin with words such as: although, since, whoever, when, because and etc..

Example:
Since he’s angry…
Whoever is willing…
Because I am feeling anxious…

Example in sentences:
Since he’s willing, he offered his food to the beggar.
Whatever they decide, I will agree to it.

A phrase is a group of words that does not contain both a subject and a verb and functions as a single part of speech.

Examples:
Best friend (functions as a noun)
Needing help (functions as an adjective)
With the blue shirt (a prepositional phrase functioning as an adjective)
For twenty days (a prepositional phrase functioning as an adverb)
