San Martin National High School (SMNHS) may have missed out on the gold-medal match, but standing on the podium with bronze around their necks proved they were still among the elite at the Philippine Inter-School Sport Association (PISSA) 5v5 Basketball Boys Championship Qualifier that transpired at San Jose Del Monte National Trade School (SJDMNTS) on January 17.
Focus and determination painted the players' faces as quarter one commenced. Luck wasn't on their side with this one, SMNHS struggled to maintain their usual intensity, leading to a gap in defensive rotations that SJDMNTS was able to exploit. Even if the shots weren't falling, SMNHS persevered. SMNHS showed heart to keep the score close at 24-15, in favor of SJDMNTS.
Quarter two was a much slower game for SMNHS. The deficit widened in the second period as SMNHS went cold, building a massive cushion for SJDMNTS with 30โ18.
There wasn't much of a change coming into the third quarter, which quickly made it clear that the game was a rout. SMNHS was bleeding points with 36-21, still in favor of SJDMNTS. The game continued and 3 more minutes left for third quarterโit still wasn't looking good for SMNHS. The quarter wrapped with the scores 49-31.
Any hopes of a late-game surge evaporated in the fourth quarter, which proved to be a mirror image of their earlier struggles. They crossed the finish line almost by momentum alone. The fourth quarter remained lopsided, and while they secured the bronze, it was a quiet end to a game where they never truly found their footing.
Despite a performance that was 'mid' at best, their earlier work in the tournament made sure that they didn't leave empty-handed. They secured the bronze not because they outplayed their opponent, but because they persevered through a nightmare game. It wasn't the masterclass they wanted, but a podium finish is still a trophy in the cabinet.
