Play isn't only preparation. It meets the child where they are, and honors who they are and how they learn best.

It is the developmentally-appropriate way that engages our children's brains, emotions, and even their hearts.

One of the most anticipated events in our school year (probably next to events like the end-of-year exhibit and the Christmas Party), is the Voting of the Class Name.

Part and parcel of the Reggio approach is to treat children as citizens, and even prepare them in age-appropriate ways to join our society. One of the ways we do this is to instill democratic principles by allowing them to choose their own class name.

Once they’ve gotten to know the routine, the environment, and one another, the teachers begin to ask them what name they’d like to call their class. The bigger kids are more excited as they already have a history of the past names inside their memory banks. They nominate names. The sky’s the limit at first. Then we tell them that it has to include both the boys and girls in class.

Then, we ask them to vote on which name they’d like. Sometimes, we have to shortlist. Sometimes, the vote is straightforward. In any case, the name they choose is theirs. All the way to the culmination/ graduation day. We honor it as the official class name, even on our official Yearbook.

Thus, this year, we are proud to present you with our classes: The Avengers Class (in the AM) and the Pokemon Class (in the PM).

Trapped!

Spurred by the inquiry on insects and how to trap them, as well as superhero play, our kids have created and played with all sorts of traps!

There was a “tape and strings” trap. There were metal grids that turned into methods to catch “Captain Ipis” (our emergency light with a moustache) and zombies. They trapped themselves as well as their imaginary enemies.

It is an imaginative adventure that both our biggies (the older kids) and even our littlies (younger kids) were so engrossed in.

We saw a lot of the enveloping play schema - in how they put even themselves into the traps.

The biggies also had an apparent need for big movement, heavy work, and an interest in construction play. That’s why our Atelierista, Teacher Rai, brought out the metal grids to challenge them.

Even the littlies got into the action as soon as they figured out how to use the locks and connectors.

It also became opportunities for learning to control impulses, being flexible, and find solutions together by using language.

It looks like their imagination, language, and socio-emotional skills were set free!

There is no one “Reggio” kind of school.

For those of us still getting acquainted with the Reggio Approach, we might be surprised to find out that there is no one way of doing Reggio. Unlike other pedagogies, Reggio actually resists exact replications of how it is done. In fact, if a school is not in the town of Reggio Emilia itself, it can not call itself a “Reggio school,” only a “Reggio-inspired” school (like Play Patch).

This is because one of the core beliefs of the Reggio Approach is Adaptazione - or how we adhere to the same principles but are flexible enough to adapt to the country, immediate community, and the needs of the children the school belongs. It also takes into account the lived experience and expertise of the particular set of teachers.

Thus, no two Reggio-inspired schools are alike. Each one is a reflection of, and a contributor to the community it finds itself a part of.

We take it a step further in Play Patch: Because we follow the children’s interests and allow that to be the starting point of discoveries, no two batches of children are alike. It’s exciting how the developmental needs of children may be the same, the Reggio principles may stay, but every child unfolds in her own wonderful way.

Therein lies the difficulty, beauty, and strength of the Reggio approach: Ina-angkop namin sa bansa, sa panahon, sa komunidad, at lalo’t lalo na sa bata.

G's Many Rooms for Insects

Our insect friends keep teaching us these days. This interest has dialogued with play invitations, schemas, and joy (sometimes mayhem in the atelier!) and allowed all of us to learn from each other.

Following up on G’s and the other older kids’ interest in trapping insects,
Teacher Mika invited him to paint on an egg tray to “trap the spiders," and started dotting on the spaces. G began making his own dots and placed the crayon pebbles inside. He proclaimed, "This can be the many rooms!"

As he played, he allowed us to see that he is utilizing a math skill called “one-to-one correspondence.”

It is a subskill of number sense. It allows them to understand
what numbers actually mean.

It seems that trapping animals helps unlock much learning and joy.

In Reggio-speak, we say the child is a "protagonist." This is to say the child is a hero, the main driver of her learning, already a citizen who is infinitely capable.

Even as the teacher is also a protagonist (which we can cover in another post), the child is the main character of the learning. She is not a passive consumer of lessons. She propels the discovery with her awe and curiosity. No matter how young she may seem to be!

This is also why, when we document her learning, we do so with great respect, writing and showing images of her heroic journey filled with trials and triumphs.

Swipe to learn more about how the child is, in the vernacular, the "bida."

We respect the child as an already-capable citizen today and honor her with more agency in how she chooses to learn. We also know that the foundation of the skills they will need throughout life - math, literacy, socio-emotional, and many more - are all learned through play.

A conference in the Atelier

When we think about the “hundred languages of children,” we usually think about art. And rightly so. Art opens us all up to wonderful dialogue with countless materials. We learn the languages of paper, color, various pigments, textures, glue, and many more.

Technology also opens up many languages. Technology - like the microscope.

If you combine the microscope, the bugs, and the child, the conversation becomes so much richer in discovery and curiosity. After all, as they navigate the microscope, they can understand the bugs better.

These conferences happen many times. But we have to be sure that we listen.

Meet our Atelierista, Teacher Rai.

The Atelier (the transformable, versatile Art Studio) is a defining part of any Reggio-inspired school. Teacher Rai, a collage artist, musician and a Magna Cum Laude graduate of the University of the Philippines, makes our Atelier not just a place of art, discovery, and inquiry. She makes into a place of wonder.

This comes from her own strength as a person who welcomes interruptions.

“As a collage artist, I like to think of the Atelier as a living collage, a mish-mash of materials that doesn't necessarily have to make sense to grown-up eyes, but is able to spark wonder in the eyes of children.

I think that's also what being an Atelierista asks of me: to wonder with the children. Sometimes that means bringing them a /pasalubong/ of dead bugs to observe, or turning the table upside-down just to see what they would do with it, or watching them create a "horrendous monster" from a lump of clay. It means always, always, listening and observing and documenting.

As grown-ups, though, life can draw us away from wonder and awe: the tendency of always needing to schedule, plan, and being applauded for sticking to the plan no matter what. However, we need to re-learn that interruptions are good. We need to be open to them because those moments lead us to wonder.
For example, I might have planned invitations for children to make marks. However, it can lead to other “detours” into more avenues of learning. We can’t discover those other surprises if we are too stubborn.

I call this “interruptibility” - a value to mean an openness to awe and wonder that you might not have planned. It is good not only as an Atelierista, but even in life. I find now that even as I see things in nature, I ask myself, “how would my students react to this?”
