In celebration of National Indigenous Peoples Month, Brooke’s Point National High School organized a vibrant day of activities on October 29, 2024, headed by their Learning Coordinator , Mrs.Catherine M. Gales,Head Teacher II to promote awareness and appreciation for Indigenous cultures. Aligned with Presidential Proclamation No. 1906, s. 2009,and DM. 430.s.2024 the event highlighted the theme "Katutubong Edukasyon ay Patuloy na Palakasin; Pangkulturang Integridad Isulong at Patatagin," a localized take on the 2024 international theme, "Protecting the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in Voluntary Isolation and Initial Contact."
The day opened with synchronized classroom discussions led by Social Science and Araling Panlipunan teachers, who introduced students to Indigenous history, rights, and cultural practices. These sessions aimed to deepen understanding of Indigenous communities, their unique challenges, and contributions.
Afterward, students participated in a series of cultural showcases:
✅️Ethnic Attire Modelling: Students displayed traditional attire representing various Indigenous groups in the Philippines.
✅️Music and Instrumentation: Performances featuring Indigenous musical instruments filled classrooms with authentic sounds.
✅️Art and Dance Performances: Classes presented Indigenous music and dance, offering a dynamic view of cultural traditions.
✅️Role-Playing and Quiz Bowl: Students enacted Indigenous practices through role-playing, followed by a quiz bowl focused on Indigenous knowledge.
✅️Indigenous Crafts Display: A gallery exhibited Indigenous crafts and artifacts, highlighting the creativity and craftsmanship of various communities.
The celebration also featured Indigenous Attire Day, during which students and staff wore traditional clothing from different Philippine regions:
✅️Grades VII and VIII represented Mindanao,
✅️Grades IX and X showcased the Visayas, and
✅️Grades XI and XII highlighted Luzon. A “Best Costume Award” was given to students and staff with the most authentic attire, fostering respect and appreciation for Indigenous heritage.
The event was a success, with students expressing greater respect and understanding of Indigenous cultures and traditions. The celebration encouraged inclusivity and cultural pride, and the school’s leadership shared plans for future cultural programs and collaborations with Indigenous representatives.
Brooke’s Point National High School’s National Indigenous Peoples Month celebration reflects its commitment to inclusivity, cultural respect, and lifelong learning, laying the groundwork for future cultural education within the school community.
