𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗹𝗮𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗵 "𝗬𝗘𝗦 𝘁𝗼 𝗡𝗢 𝗖𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗴𝗻" 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀

Today, the school and its stakeholders joined efforts to launch the 𝐘𝐄𝐒 𝐭𝐨 𝐍𝐎 𝐂𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐠𝐧, a program designed to promote positive behavior and address safety concerns raised by parents, school personnel, and learners.

Bullying, cleanliness, and student behavior were among the issues highlighted during the program.

Mayor Franklin A. Odsey explained that responsible decision-making is an important part of the campaign. "Saying yes can help build confidence, friendship, cooperation, and unity, while saying no can help people avoid harmful actions," he said.

Representing Schools Division Superintendent Benilda M. Daytaca, John F. Libongen Jr., OIC-Assistant Schools Division Superintendent, encouraged learners to walk away from bad influences and make wise choices and decisions.

“The future belongs to those who say no to negative influences," Libongen said.

Meanwhile, Attorney Florence N. Taguiba, Punong Barangay of Poblacion, Bontoc, emphasized the importance of setting a good example. Her message encouraged adults guiding young people to practice the values they want learners to follow.

Representing the religious sector, Pastor Peter F. Miranda of the Cordillera Highland Baptist Church, on behalf of Pastor Rexton F. Chakas, encouraged learners to develop good behavior and make positive choices. He reminded them of the importance of showing love and helping others. “Say yes to kindness, respect, compassion and say no to negative influences,” Miranda said.

PTA President Wilbert A. Padangan expressed his support for the campaign and urged learners to practice positive values and make responsible choices.

Principal F. Tudlong explained that the campaign seeks to shift learners’ attention toward positive choices rather than destructive behavior. He emphasized that the school community must work together to promote good conduct.

The campaign has three main objectives: to develop awareness and appreciation of positive values, to help learners resist negative influences, and to encourage them to become responsible, resilient, and value-driven individuals.

For its initial phase, the campaign will focus on cleanliness during the first two weeks. Values teachers will integrate this into their lessons.

The campaign ultimately aims to make the school a safer place, help learners develop good behavior, and strengthen the school as a supportive environment for learning.

Yet for millions of students around the globe, the real lesson is only just beginning.

Every year on October 5, World Teachers’ Day offers a moment to stop and honor the teachers shaping our future. Established by UNESCO in 1994, the date commemorates the historic 1966 adoption of the UNESCO/ILO Recommendation Concerning the Status of Teachers. What began as an international policy recommendation has since grown into a worldwide movement recognizing the heart, sacrifice, and influence behind the profession.

Beyond the dates and official declarations, Teachers’ Day is profoundly personal. It is a moment to say thank you to the people who patiently guide us through complex ideas and believe in our potential, especially when we struggle to see it ourselves. Teachers do far more than deliver lectures; they listen during tough moments, offer encouragement when confidence falters, and push us to keep trying. Their words often stay with us long after we step out of the classroom.

Expressing appreciation doesn't require grand gestures. A handwritten card, an honest "thank you," a warm smile, or simply giving your best effort in class can carry immense weight. These quiet acknowledgments signal to teachers that their patience, late hours, and dedication do not go unnoticed.

𝙒𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝘾𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙂𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙨 𝙒𝙖𝙨𝙩𝙚 𝙖 𝙎𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙙 𝙇𝙞𝙛𝙚

Every day, pollution leaves its mark on the world, from mountains of plastic waste piling up in communities to discarded materials finding their way into landfills, rivers, and seas. As the amount of waste continues to grow, the question remains: What can we do with the things we throw away?

For some students, the answer is simple: create something new.

On September 22, 2026, the University of Northern Philippines (UNP) Auditorium became a runway of imagination as students transformed ordinary discarded materials into extraordinary pieces of wearable art through their eco-fashion project, “Flow in Motion 2026.”

What others might have considered useless trash became the raw materials for creativity. Discarded plastics, recyclable objects, and other waste materials were collected, redesigned, and carefully transformed into fashionable and functional creations. Materials that once seemed destined for the garbage bin were given a second life and a chance to tell a different story.

But “Flow in Motion 2026” was more than just a fashion show.

Through their creations, the students demonstrated that environmental action does not always have to begin with grand campaigns or extraordinary efforts. Sometimes, it begins with something as simple as refusing to throw something away.

A discarded material may look worthless at first glance, but with imagination and creativity, it can become something meaningful. The students showed that waste is not necessarily the end of a material’s journey; it can be the beginning of something new.

Their work also offered an important reminder about responsibility. Every plastic bottle reused, every piece of scrap transformed, and every material kept away from the landfill represents a small step toward a cleaner environment. Individually, these actions may seem insignificant. Together, however, they can contribute to a culture of sustainability.

Beyond the lights, designs, and applause of the fashion show was a message that everyone could understand: protecting the environment begins with the choices we make every day.

We do not always need to do something extraordinary to make a difference. We can start by reducing what we consume, reusing what we already have, and recycling materials whenever possible. Small actions may not solve the world's environmental problems overnight, but they can influence the way people think and inspire others to act.

“Flow in Motion 2026” may not have solved the world's waste problem, but it proved that change can begin with a single idea. It showed that creativity can turn something unwanted into something valuable, while reminding us that the environment needs not only awareness but also action.

Perhaps the next time we see an empty bottle, a piece of cardboard, an old piece of fabric, or another discarded object, we should pause before throwing it away.

Maybe it is not trash after all. Maybe it is waiting for a second life.

In a world increasingly burdened by waste, the choice is ours: Will we continue to see trash as worthless, or will we use our creativity to turn trash into a trend?

𝗖𝗢𝗟𝗨𝗠𝗡 | 𝘽𝙚𝙮𝙤𝙣𝙙 𝙏𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙤𝙨: 𝙎𝙚𝙭 𝙀𝙙𝙪𝙘𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙖𝙨 𝙖 𝙇𝙞𝙛𝙚-𝙎𝙖𝙫𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙋𝙤𝙡𝙞𝙘𝙮

The Department of Education's (DepEd) confirmation, highlighted by Secretary Sonny Angara, to teach the practical use of contraceptives like condoms to Grade 8 students marks a critical shift in public health strategy. Rooted in the mandates of the Reproductive Health Law, this policy introduces Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) prevention in Grade 7, followed by practical contraceptive education in Grade 8. While some critics express concern over moral messaging, the reality of public health makes a convincing case where age-appropriate, structured education is the most effective tool to protect the youth. I believe that knowledge replaces risk with protection, public health needs structural interventions and education builds responsibility rather than carelessness among young people.

First, I strongly support the idea that ignorance is not safety but a sign of vulnerability. With 51 new HIV cases diagnosed daily in the Philippines and young people being affected at increasingly younger ages, relying on silence is no longer an option. Young individuals are naturally driven by curiosity, peer influence and biological changes in their bodies. Without formal instruction, they often rely on misinformation from peers or online sources. Teaching proper contraceptive use directly addresses these risks by providing clear, accurate facts that promote safe and effective care. When students understand how STIs spread and how unintended pregnancies occur, they are equipped to make informed decisions rather than reckless ones that could harm their future.

Additionally, teenage pregnancy and rising HIV rates represent urgent public health challenges that require structural and effective solutions. With roughly 139,000 young mothers aged 10 to 19 across the country, relying solely on individual restraint has proven ineffective against the spread of disease. Integrating reproductive health directly into the standardized health curriculum allows public health initiatives to reach millions of students before high-risk behaviors occur. Prevention delivered through the education system is significantly more effective and sustainable than managing health and socioeconomic crises later in life.

Finally, teaching young people about contraceptives does not signal permission to engage in early sexual activity. Instead, it creates a sense of personal responsibility and bodily autonomy. Critics often worry that moving away from a strict focus on abstinence sends the wrong message. However, practical reproductive health education will be taught alongside moral guidance, emphasizing boundary, consent and the long-term consequences of these actions. Rather than encouraging early sexual activity, comprehensive education emphasizes the subject, encouraging self-awareness, personal safety and responsible decision-making.

By treating reproductive health as an essential component of basic education instead of a taboo, the government helps clarify human development. Equipping students with age appropriate facts, health literacy and proper guidance inside the classroom ensures they leave school prepared to safeguard their own futures. So, why are we skeptical if this benefits families and young adults while helping lower the nation's HIV cases and teenage pregnancies? Acceptance should be the new norm. Just as the world keeps moving forward, we should also embrace positive change in our society.

Kidding aside...

One afternoon can remind a family what busy days push aside. On most days, everyone is busy. Parents wake up early for work. Children spend the day in school. When they get home, they are too tired to talk. They live in the same house, but they do not always share the same hours.

Proclamation No. 60 (1992) set the last week of September as Family Week. Proclamation No. 326 (2012) set the fourth Monday of September as 𝘒𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘯𝘨 𝘗𝘢𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘺𝘢 𝘔𝘢𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘢𝘨𝘢 𝘋𝘢𝘺. On this date, work in all agencies and instrumentalities of the National Government, including government-owned or controlled corporations and state universities and colleges, is suspended starting 1:00 p.m. The half-day lets government workers leave earlier and join their families at the table.

In Bontoc, that afternoon means a mother hears about her child’s day. A father rests with his family. Grandparents tell old stories. Children sit with everyone. The meal may be simple. The talk may be ordinary. But the family is together.

These moments look small. Families remember them. The slow afternoon. The longer meal. The talk that made them smile. These are the times a family keeps.

This afternoon, we can also choose family over friends and gadgets for a while. Our siblings, parents, and grandparent are growing older. They work and do their best for us. Time with them does not cost much, but it is priceless. We do not need to wait for a special day to sit with them, listen, and stay a little longer.

Family Day does not need to be grand. It needs time and attention. What we remember is not what we finished. It is who we sat with. Sometimes one afternoon is enough to remind us that family comes first.

Make this afternoon count, ka-Mountain High!
