Bohol Island State University’s Gender and Development Office (BISU GAD), in collaboration with Holy Name University (HNU) and Tagbilaran City College (TCC), took part in the 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women and Children (VAWC), advocating the theme, “VAW Bigyang Wakas, Ngayon Na ang Oras," last December 3-6, 2024.
The four-day event gathered students, university officials, VAWC frontliners, resource speakers, and guests, who shared insights and experiences, fostered collaboration, and strengthened efforts toward creating a safer, VAWC-free community through campaigns, educational workshops, and strategic discussions.
In their VAWC Awareness and Training Workshop, on December 3, at BISU Bilar Campus, Local Government Unit (LGU) workers and officials were invited in order for them to be geared with knowledge and action plans to combat the issue within their respective areas.
BISUans, TCCians, and Holynamians were also given the opportunity to join the second day’s “GAD Talks: Surviving VAWC and Orientation on RA 9262" on December 4 at JJ’s Seafood Village, where they learned practical coping strategies, available support services, and engaged in lectures on the legal provisions of the Republic Act.
The Culmination Program of this event, on December 5, at BISU MC’s Activity Center saw the different universities compete in the GAD Exhibit, Quiz Bowl, Short and Sweet Play, and Debate Contest and award the winners from the contenders of these competitions.
Following that day, a film-showing and open mic hugot session took place, where students filled the Activity Center to witness Colleen Hoover’s ‘It Ends With Us’ and engage in expressing their insights, reflections, takeaways, and realizations from the movie and the event in general.
Emphasizing the significance of this feat, Mrs. Catherene Perin, DM, BISU’s University GAD Director, pointed out, “Let us remember that this is not just an event; it is a movement, a call to action, and a testament to our collective will to end violence in all its forms.”
Notably, conducting an event like this underscores the vital role of education, collaboration, and community engagement in addressing the persistent issue of VAWC. Through its various activities, the empowerment of individuals to break free from silence grows. This serves as a podium to strengthen efforts toward creating a safer, more informed, and violence-free community for all its people.
